Review: I was very surprised at the beginning of the story when the children's grandfather suggests that the children spend the summer on an island by themselves. But they really weren't by themselves. A caretaker and his assistant lived there as well, But the kids stay in an old barn! I guess times were different back then. *shrugs shoulders* There's some drama and a bit of a mystery. I can see how these stories were loved by kids back when they were published.

Garrett (Cold Fury Hockey, #2) by Sawyer Bennett
Garrett by Sawyer Bennett
278 pgs
How it fits: #2 Cold Fury Hockey series

Finished 9/18/19
Rated 3.5 rounded up to 4 on GR

Review: on the whole I enjoyed this addition to the hockey series. Once Garrett decided to be in he was really all in and a pretty nice guy even though all you hear about for the first part of the book are his man whoring ways and no second dates - unless more than one date was required to get you into his or your bed. These ways are pretty much in your face as the book starts with him waking up in bed with two chicks after a night of sex and he has no clue what their names are - just sayin'. So his turn around to good guy was slightly startling ( and if was true life - unbelievable). Olivia is truly given a raw deal but decides to live life to the fullest and not pass up opportunities as you never know what life has in store for you. No one knows this better than her. She is diagnosed with cancer right before she meets Garrett. Olivia decides it's the perfect time for a fling. What happens when Garrett falls in love with her and she feels like she is setting him up for heartbreak down the road?? Pretty sure you've guessed it and that is when I disliked Olivia. You really can't make unilateral decisions in a relationship - unless someone cheats on you - then by all means go ahead and make the decision that is best for you. Otherwise - you have to suck it up buttercup and allow the other person in on your thoughts and make their own decision - you can't make the decision for them. Otherwise this was really a fun read. I especially loved the epilogue. It also sets you up for next book - which I'm pretty sure is going to be a cry fest due to the happenings in this book. I'm actually kind of surprised about who the next book is about. We'll see if Ms Bennett can pull it off and make it believable ....unless there is a major time lapse between book 2 and book 3.

Immune (Rylee Adamson, #2) by Shannon Mayer
Book: Immune by Shannon Mayer 9/18/19
Pages: 242
How it Fits: Rylee Adamson, #2
Rating: 4 Stars

Review:

Rylee gets a request to find a missing little boy, but before she can start she has to take care of the ice poison in her blood. A setback she is grudgingly dealing with. That comes with it's own set of problems as she needs the help of 4 shamans, 3 of which are missing.

This book is picking up the pace of the overall story arc. There were a few clues that are hinting at what Rylee is going to become. We finally get the Rylee/O'Shea romance (super excited!) and then poor O'Shea gets smacked with a giant obstacle he needs to work through on his own. I hope he's not missing too much in the next book. Alex is a hoot! Forever stuck in mid-transition from man to wolf, he also has a young mind. Even Rylee can't help but laugh at his excitement in the midst of tough situation. "Yuppy doody!"

Review
Okay! There is a reason I LOVE TJ Klune! Yes, he is super hot, but we'll talk about that separately (because, phew!!). Anyway, he is one absolute crazy cookie! He has managed to create some of the most OTT characters here, that I've ever seen anywhere. I loved Sandy/Helena Handbasket in the first book - so when we were given his story in Book 2 - I couldn't wait enough for the fireworks!

... and fireworks they were! Sandy, Darren, and their slow-burning tension. I'm honestly exhausted (but in a good way!). SO HOT! Yes, the storyline was blah! and the nothing to write home about - but this series is probably not meant to analyze the narrative structure - it's a madhouse which will make you cackle with joy and absolute sheer cookieness!

Can't wait to tackle the third one!
P.S. It was SO SO SO GOOD to meet Kori/Corey from BOatK series! I miss my favourite family!

Review: Well...that was one convoluted mess of a case! Made it a little less enjoyable because it was so hard to follow; started out kinda Agatha Christie-ish and then for some reason began to remind me of a dinner theater production of Edwin Drood I saw as a teen (it's been 30+ years since then, I barely remember the plot but I'm pretty certain it's not this, so I am still not sure why). And then we get to the conspiracy/corruption part and I am HERE FOR THAT. Hope that arc picks up in the next book.

Also, Somers needs to stop being a cock-tease. I'm actually glad Nico punched him in the face and knocked him on his ass, especially given that ending.

Review: Book 2 of the Alpha & Omega series did not disappoint.

Bran wants to come out to the public and he is hoping to get the support of not just his wolves but of the those across the pond in Europe. So he sends Charles and Anna on his behalf to Seattle to discuss the game plan. But of course things don't go smoothly.

There is a lot of interesting characters in this book, we have Arthur who thinks he is The Once and Future king reincarnate. Dana the fae who is charge of the meetings but has more going on then it seems. Kidnappings and killings, and a hunt that helps Anna become more of who she is.

Patricia Briggs is one of my favorites and once again she has no let me down.

Review: well I think this might be the fastest I've ever listened to an installment in this series. From start to finish it was under a day. I didn't want to stop listening to it. Noelle Bridges and John Masterson have been fabulous narrators for this series. Raven wants to be the first women police officer of the Northlands - where 'the womans' place is in the home being protected by her strong husband. Raven was in the first group of children at the integrated school. She came from the Motlands with her teacher Kya. Raven is strong, outspoken and funny. Leo is her boss and made to be her quasi protector who puts her in the basement of the police department sorting cold cases. Little does he know that Raven will stumble upon an old case that will rock their world. So fun and lots of history brought up that will impact the future. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Looking forward to book 10 and then the prequel book as well. I'll be sad when this series is done.

Review:

Leda has been working extra hard to advance up the Legion as fast as she can. As part of going to investigate the Witches, Leda is to advance to the 2nd level and get the power of the Witch’s Cauldron. I like Leda. She is definitely strong-willed but she is becoming a powerhouse player that is catching the attention of the higher ups. Especially Nix, the First Angel. I'm glad that there isn't going to be a love triangle, like it was being suggested in the first book. I like Nero, so can't wait to see how these two progress. Looking forward to the next book.

Review: Not really a 4 but much better than a 3 so I can't see rounding down, especially as I am eager to get to the next installment because...Argh, another cliffhanger.

I'm a little reviewed-out from writing my last one, but I do have to type something since this is a challenge read. That said, I really did like the flashback to Dane's past, to seeing what happened to him, how he ended up with the Tiger Curse, and why he is so mistrustful of love...the thing that will eventually set him free if only he'd allow himself to feel it. Those sections were heart-breaking to listen to; even though the events were mentioned in the previous book, getting the complete story from his POV enriched the tale immensely.

I'm a little miffed at Nick, though. After that lunch with his family, he's still standing by them...and risks everything he has with Dane (the developing relationship, not the clothes/gifts/money - he could care less for all that) by asking him to set those assholes free of the agreement. I mean, I get it: It might be hard to love someone that puts your family out on the street & takes everything from them...but given their actions and attitudes (which have NOT changed), they're not learning from the opportunity Bane extended them. Aren't trying to be better people. IMHO, at some point, you gotta wash your hands of it all.

Still waiting for the Big Reveal and how Nick handles it. I think he's gonna be upset that Dane didn't trust him and that will lead to More Drama and/or a Big Misunderstanding...

But I gotta say that I am intrigued and engaged by the narration and story so I'm sticking with it to the end.

Book Read: I is for Innocent | Sue Grafton
Date Read: 26-Sep-2019
How it Fits: Kinsey Millhone #9
Rating: ★★★.5

Review
Sue Grafton is an extremely picturesque author. She always, always, always describes new characters. If Kinsey is meeting up with someone, she will describe their meeting place. She makes the story and the characters extremely relatable and for me that is the biggest win of this series.

Obviously, with a series that is slated to run for 26 books, it is natural that some would hit the mark and some would be a miss - this was right in the middle. It was sort of a transitional book, so I was certainly expecting the pace to drop a little as Kinsey gets her life together. And all of that happened, but this still is a great tale of how investigations were done in an era with no technological advancements as today, yet its not too old for Kinsey to use archaic methods to solve her case. Its a great time capsule and Sue definitely keeps the story interesting.

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
Read: Sept 27
Rating: 4 stars
Pages: 453
Review: First of all, book 2 much better then book 1 in my opinion.

City of Ashes picks up just after the events of City of Bones, Clary's mother is still in the hospital. Jace and her still fighting their forbidden feelings. Valentine still up to no good, or is it good, to him he thinks it's good. Magnus Bane is great as I assumed he would be. Simon, oh Simon, you gave me many moments of breath holding.

Alot goes down this book, another of the Mortal Instruments has been stolen (in the most brutal ways) and in order for it to work as Valentine wants he needs to the blood of 4 children. A child of the night, the moon, a demon and fae.

War is coming and this was just the tip of the iceberg.

How it fits: Book 2 in a series

Aunt Bessie's Holiday (Isle of Man #8) by Diana Xarissa
Book: Aunt Bessie's Holiday
How it fits: 8th in the series
Pages: 251
Rating: 3 stars
Review: The writing in this book seemed a bit smoother. I can tell that the author has had more experience. I really didn't care for the overall theme of marital fidelity. I also didn't care for the ending. It felt like there were missing pieces.
