LOL Yes! You get me. Our husbands needs to start a support group for unfortunate souls married to GR challenge addicts.

There was also never an issue to go to other teams and chat with them. I did, in the beginning, and always felt welcome.
I've got no problem with whether people take part in the buddy reads or not. It's more that one of the good things about this group's team challenges is that the mods try as much as possible to ensure that teams are evenly matched. I'm in a group that did a team readathon challenge last year where people were randomly placed in teams. We ended up with one group who had some very big readers on it and you just knew from very early on that your group had no chance of winning. I found that the players who read less weren't motivated to read more as they felt what's the point my couple of extra books won't make any difference. Which I think was Corey's point about the 40 points.
But with the new addition of points for the buddy reads and this hadn't been taken into account (I think the mods probably didn't guess what a difference it would make) meant that teams were no longer evenly matched.
I've never yet been in a winning team for any of the team challenges I've done here or in other groups and I've had lots of fun but it is nice to think that you are in with a chance.

I don't think being chatty or not chatty is a issue.I am not a chatty person by nature, but that did not hinder my reading for our team. I earned quite a bit of points for my team.
I think it just went on too long...the first month I was really into it, the second it started to wear down, by the third month, I was just ready for it to be over.
I loved my team, and enjoyed getting to know them, I don't think any one of them held us back.
My problem is there were too many places I had to post.
Post in your group, post in your books read thread, post on your spreadsheet, post in MOD group....and then I would forget at least one or two of those places.....
If I play again it will definitely not be as a MOD. Maybe I would have had more fun.

I'm not a big buddy reads person because it takes too much commitment. I like to be able to read however fast (or slow) I like without worrying about other people. My team did have quite a few people that did buddy reads. They created questions and all. They seemed to really enjoy it. But, I guess it's not for everybody.
I only did the buddy reads for extra points. That is the same with BOM with DQs. It was just for my team. If it wasn't for the points, I most likely wouldn't have done them. So for me, it gave me a push. I do like the BRs way more that the DQs in the BOM. I feel I get more out of a BR with a discussion. In the BOM it's just answering questions and little interaction. As for teams. I think it's about what you make out of it. Some people are more chatty than others, some people have real life that gets in the way (work or school or family). It's always going to be challenging to get a huge amount of people together with likes/dislikes/preferences etc.
For me I felt like I was just getting to know some of my teammates. Others are pulled away by other groups but it really comes down to are you having fun reading as a team. If not then it's time to reassess it.
I'm ready for the wheel-a-thon now!! My reading motivation has sharply dropped since I knew the challenge was basically over, and I need that team challenge mentality to get back in the crazy reading mood!I agree with most of you that it depends on you as a person what makes the challenge fun or not. It's hard to make a perfect team or challenge, but I think for the most part people had fun (even if less/more fun that previous challenges). Hopefully people who like the team challenges will give the various formats a try and then they can decide which is their preferred type of team/challenge.

I did have a lot of fun, but agree with Abbie that it was a bit too long.

Heh. I made my husband help setting up the auto spreadhsheets. He does laugh at all the reading though.
It was especially bad with UncoverIt! as that took an awful lot of mod work (at least a few hours every Sunday, and then the daily questions and spreadsheet updating). He would just shake his head.... "I'm sure they can wait for one hour for an answer"... Umm.. no because they don't know what to READ until they get the answer! duh!
;)
;)
Lol I didn't play that one as I only joined this group when the last Wheelathon challenge started, I shall be on the lookout for others though, I am a challenge junkie, end up signing up for everything!
The worst is trying to explain why I'm pushing myself to finish a book that I'm not really enjoying. "Why are you reading it if you don't even like it?"WHERE ELSE AM I GOING TO FIND A BOOK WITH A Z TITLE WRITTEN IN 2012 BY AN AUTHOR WHOSE NAME STARTS WITH R AND HAS A MONKEY ON THE COVER SET IN IOWA?!? *Obviously* this is the only book I can read right now. Challenges. Deadlines. Gosh.
Yes, the behind the scene work is a lot. More so than most people think.I loved the challenge and enjoyed it a lot. Well, done!
Just so everyone knows, I have been reading all your comments and we'll add it all to the mix that is the cocktail of "what we can do/should do/might do" in challenges
The BR points were my idea. I have to say we underestimated the number of BRs that would be requested. In hindsight, we would have lowered the points value. The idea was to encourage people to talk about books, as that is a criticism we generally get in challenges in that some teams just post books read and don't talk about their books. It was also meant to be a way for slower readers to be able to contribute more (e.g. that 40 point book you read over 2 weeks is actually worth 70 points).
The DQ posting points we actually loved as mods as we got to be participants for once. I did notice some of the books there wasn't much interaction though, just posting and answering and that isn't really the idea. we have come up with a blurb for future BOMs to try and explain the purpose of how we do them. I think it is just a product of 20-30+ people reading a book, although we may be reading the comments it becomes too time consuming to comment back
In saying all that, the survey results are very positive so I'm glad that in the main people had fun and enjoyed the challenge. We are always open to feedback and ideas :)

Haha Cait I'm usually like"erghhh this book is so bad I need to bleach my eyeballs!"
Hubby's like "well stop reading it then!!! "
I just look at him and roll my eyes and sigh...........shakes head.

I preferred the BR's to the BOM and that is just a personal thing. If I am enjoying a book then I have to continue it to the end, the thought of stopping after a few chapters until the next day is like asking me to step away from the freezer with the chocolate ice cream in it!
If it's there, it's gonna get finished!
RebeccaS my reading has dropped too. Not sure if it is due to this challenge ending or just not in the mood to read. I always enjoy the challenges in this group. This time around I found it harder to keep track of points with the BR and BOM as a captain. I spent more time updating the spreadsheet and filling in page overrides, BOM and BR. I work full time and would like to be able to do other things besides worrying about a challenge and updating things as often as I felt I had too.
Our team was chatty but not overly chatty. We tried to read more to get more points but for some people to have to read about 5 books a week and make about all of them BOM or BR to earn the points to even be able to try and catch up was very daunting. Not all of our members read that fast.
I just can't wait for the next challenge to start.

Yep, been there too. Wandering around the library, and when the librarian asks if they can help I kind of say "er...no, I'm OK" because I'm too embarrassed to tell her I want two books, titles beginning with D, with red covers, written by women...I don't really care what they are about or how good they are..."
I'm still not done reading. Our team is still working towards our 20,000 pts. We decided to finish the challenge. :)

Guess I am lucky I have a Hubby that encourages me to read and has no problem with me staying up late to read. Holidays, birthday and special occasions he knows the way to my heart is books.

The BOM aren't always what I want to read, and I don't like answering the questions as much as just posting my random thoughts throughout a book. I loved being able to just quickly jump online and post a sentence or two of what I was thinking during a book. It helped me think more about what I was reading, instead of just rush rushing to get to the end and start another one etc. I agree they definitely gave a huge point bump (which is also why I did them). ;)
I definitely would like to continue with the BRs even though the challenge has ended, so I'm happy it encouraged me to try them out.

Hahaha that's so true! I always put a ton of books on hold at the library so they will fit all these different categories. Then I make up lots of excuses to drive up near the library (which is 30-45 mins away) and say to my fiance "oh...while we're up here...I just need to run into the library..."
I think our next house may need to be within walking distance or I'm going to drive him nuts!
Oh I had to laugh about the husbands not getting it. My husband just shakes his head and says "but how do you know people are really reading that number of books"... I just give him the stare. I really need to join the obsessed Goodreads Tragics too.
And thank you to everybody who put in a tremendous amount of effort to make it all work.
Lisa, that's the exact other argument I get! When I force myself to finish something I hate or I'm scrambling to finish something in time, he goes "Why don't you just SAY you finished it?" And I stare at him. And he goes "You know everyone else probably just says they're reading all of those on time but they aren't."
And I continue to stare at him.
He's very supportive of my reading in general but the whole challenge thing is beyond him lol

You are welcome to not answer the BOM questions. You can just post random thoughts or only answer questions you feel like answering :)
Any idea when the new challenge will start?
