SOLVED. Children's book about a detective basset hound that helps the girl solve a mystery. [s]

This is another one for my little cousin.

The family gets this dog from a friend or a family member that died, and he's a real sad basset hound, constantly described as having the droopy red eyes and the long ears. There's a scene where the hound just sits on the curb, looking sad, and the girl has to bring him inside.

Something goes missing, I think, or is stolen from the family, and the girl wants to look for it, and the dog finds a trail, so they go hunting for it. They end up finding it, and there's a thing with the dog either having to leave, or something like that.

I think there's also a villain lair that they find, with stuff stashed inside?

I read it between 2008-2014, English, print copy, and the cover had the basset hound on it, with a trail of footprints next to it (?).
