Gremlin | 966 comments Here we are! Staring into the final 3 months of 2014 which holds a vast expanse of unread books before us, ready to be completed!

And what's the best way to finish the year? By FINISHING WHAT WE STARTED!!! (Or thought about starting. Ha!).

description

From October 1 through December 31 of 2014 participants of this challenge will read books from the following "catch-up/finally get around to" categories (must read at least one book from each):

One or more of any books in a series that you've started but not continued in over 6 months (Prior to 4/1/2014). It can be an ongoing or a completed book series.
One or more of the books that have been on your TBR (To Be Read) Goodreads bookshelf for 6 months or more (Prior to 4/1/2014)
One or more of any book that you've had in your possession for 6 months or more. Physical or ebook, Owned or borrowed! (Waiting to be read since 4/1/2014 or earlier). Obviously we'll have to use the honor system for this one. :)

You must read at least one from each of the categories above, but the rest is mix and match.

Details:
-Books must be more than 150 pages to qualify
-Audio books are allowed
-No more than 3 books from the same series
-No more than 3 newer releases from 2014 will be allowed (must be published prior to 4/1/2014)
-1 non-YA book is allowed if you're planning to simply Finish the challenge (6 books).
-2 non-YA books are allowed if you're aiming for Bronze, Silver, or Gold levels of completion.
(Non-YA = middle grade, New Adult, or Adult).

Here are your completion goals!
6 books - Finisher
8 books - Bronze Medal Winner
10 books - Silver Medal Winner
12 books - Gold Medal Winner!

I'll be keeping track of participants progress (as much as possible) in post #2. Participants will be Alphabetically by their name and the number on the post made to declare their participation.

When posting your progress, please remember to use the number of that original post as well.

Finish strong, friends! On your marks, get set....

Emily (librarylil) | 358 comments I'm in! I hope. But I have a question. I don't use a Goodreads TBR shelf. I also almost never buy books. I read library books pretty much 99.5% of the time. Therefore, I have neither a physical bookshelf (other than library shelves) nor a goodreads TBR shelf. Can I use a mental TBR shelf, on the honor system? Because otherwise, I basically have no resource for books for this challenge.

To Read List:
The Mark of Athena (The Heroes of Olympus, #3) by Rick Riordan The House of Hades (The Heroes of Olympus, #4) by Rick Riordan

Continuing a Series:
Call the Midwife Farewell to the East End by Jennifer Worth (not read anything in the series since January 2014)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) So once we read books from the 3 categories we can read whatever we want or do we need to stick to the categories? Do the books in the 3 categories have to be series books or can they be any books that have been on our shelves
By Physical book shelf could that mean book on kindle that you have not read. My e book shelf has much more on it due to that buy with one click feature that Amazon has.
Can I use a mental TBR shelf, on the honor system?

Okay, I am not Gremlin, so I'll let her have the final say with these questions. BUT, based on what we discussed I believe that the challenge is like this:

Once you have read one book from each of the three categories you can read whatever you want provided they still fit in one of those three categories. It has to be something that you have been wanting/intending to read but haven't.

No, outside of the 'series' category, the other books you read do not have to be serial books.

I am pretty sure that 'physical' book shelf only means books that you have already purchased and never read, whether that is an 'ebook' shelf or a print book shelf.

And lastly, provided you have at least one book that you've had in your possession (ebook or print book) in the last year that you can read for that category in the challenge... I think it would be fine to use a mental TBR shelf on the honor system if you don't use a Goodreads TBR. Another idea, is do you have a list of books you've wanted to get from the library that you keep putting off?

Anyway, like I said, Gremlin will have a final say... but if I read the challenge correctly, I think I have it right...

Gremlin?

You should definitely join in the fun, Emily! And we'll make sure that you can (and I'm with you - I largely read only library books).

You're definitely free to use your mental TBR list. I trust you to find the books that have been on there a long time.

And do you have a single book in the house/online that you've been meaning to read? Or maybe that a family member or roommate owns that you've been interested in? IF not, let me know - I might have an alternate category for special circumstances, such as yours.

Yes - I would definitely count ebooks that you've had in your possession for more than 6 months as "physical" books (I'll adjust the wording in the original post to reflect that).

Gremlin | 966 comments Hi Ashley! It sounds to me like you've definitely figured it out :)

Things to keep in mind: Don't start reading until October 1st. And when you finish a book, make sure to add a comment to this thread telling us what you've read (because I'll be keeping track of everyone's numbers in post #2).

message 29: by Gremlin (new)

Gremlin | 966 comments Oh! Also, when you post that you've read something, please let us know that your original post (declaring your participation) was #29.

We actually have another Ashley in the challenge, so that's how I'll know which one you are :)

message 30: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Also, something I noticed about your list. (great selection, btw) It looks like all of them are adult selections, and the challenge only allows for one non-Ya pick. :)

The amazing challenge-moderator-wingman strikes again! hahaha! Wendy, you're the best (and clearly more alert than I was).

Don't worry though, Ashley! You've almost got it (plus, I really loved both Graceling and Matched, so you've got some good ones on the new list!)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Ashley wrote: "You've read them? Totally awesome. I looooove love love both the miniseries and I totally loved north and south."

I liked North & South, but Love & War was hard for me to get there. The 'War' part of the book was tedious (for me). And sadly I haaaaaaaaaaated Thorn Birds, lmao. It's a popular book, and the writing in it was superb. I just didn't like the dark tone to the story (which is kinda the point so I know it was just an issue for me). Most people love it.

Sweet, I'm in. I only thought about it because I read The Dream Thieves and Lola and the Boy Next Door in March and I wanted to use the new books for the challenge. It was a totally selfish observation.

I will use post #37 to keep track of my plan & PROGRESS. I promise no more sneaky victories :)

Gremlin | 966 comments Hey folks! Super sorry that I wasn't more clear about what I meant when I said 3 new releases would be allowed. I really meant 3 books from 2014, but they all still need to be released prior to 4/1/2014.

Keep in mind, the idea is to get around to reading stuff we've been meaning to read for a while. And while I want to read Blue Lily, Lily Blue (The Raven Cycle, #3) by Maggie Stiefvater and Undivided (Unwind, #4) by Neal Shusterman as much of the rest of you, they can't count as part of this challenge :)

I've updated the wording in the original post.

1. The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith owned for more than 6 months
2. The Moment Before by Suzy Vitello TBR List over 6 months
3. Destiny Rising (The Vampire Diaries The Hunters, #3) by L.J. Smith Unfinished Series >6 months
4. Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality by Elizabeth Eulberg Owned/TBR >6 months
5. Pretenders by Lisi Harrison Owned >6 months
6. Me Since You by Laura Wiess Owned >6 months

Other possibilities (all Owned >6 months):
Better off Friends by Elizabeth Eulberg The Naturals (The Naturals, #1) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes Secret Lies by Amy Dunne Consume (The Clann, #3) by Melissa Darnell

Also.... questions. I JUST read Delirium maybe two months ago, but that entire series has been on my TBR for MONTHS. Does it count? lol Also I started Tiger's Curse in January but didn't finish it until April 21st. Doesn't count right, cause after April 1st? I have to read the sequel no matter what as a buddy read with my Godmother, so just would have been cool to kill two birds ;)
