Would this be a good place to recommend books based on this? Because I was really into fairy tales when I read this, and have a few other books for that middle-grade reading range I was into at the same time.

Absolutely! Lay 'em on us. Thanks!

Alrighty then! I would reccomend some books by Gail Carson Levine, if you're looking for fairy tale retellings. Ella Enchanted and The Two Princesses of Bamarre are the two I most remember loving. That second one even includes a princess living with a dragon for a while. She was being held against her will, though. One series that was more comedic was Tales of the Frog Princess, starting with The Frog Princess, by E D Baker. It had another princess that didn't quite fit the mold, described as not-traditionally-pretty and awkward.
I also remember liking Once Upon a Marigold by Jean Ferris. I think it was a trilogy. It's another series of funny and occasionally subversive fairytale-feeling books.
Outside of children's fantasy, I would reccomend The Princess Bride as a satirical take on romantic fantasy. Even if someone's watched the movie, the books is worth checking out.
I haven't read most of these in a long time, so I'm not sure how they hold up. I definitely vouch for Ella Enchanted and, of course, The Princess Bride. Hope someone enjoys these!
