I remember that they didn't use traditional Fantasy terms like elf and dragon. They all have weird names, some that described attributes about them. I think a dragon was called a Fire Breather. Though I may be muddling details of other books.

I remember the story is about a boy who through some means finds himself in a fantasy realm. He on his journey starts writing down observations about the creatures that the reader can read, I think they were illustrated but cant be sure. He meets up with some companions one of which is an elf looking girl who if I remember correctly he falls in love with.
I remember there is a scene where he ends up convincing everyone that 100 (or some number like that) is equal to 1 because 0 is a valueless number (can't remember why).
I also remember that either in a sequel book he and the elf as well as the main baddy find their way back to the human realm. The elf girl acts a lot like the boy did when he first went to the fantasy world. Fascinated by all the tech like a washing machine. The main baddy runs into a hunter (he is a animal like creature I think). The hunter raises a stick (which is a gun) but the main baddy isn't afraid because he knows that these humans don't have magic. He is therefore surprised when he gets shot.
I had this read to me by my elementary school teacher probably in eight, nine years ago. Also I think there was a book trailer on YouTube. It was probably a book that came from scholastic but that's just me guessing.
