Yay! Looking forward to this read. I've heard a lot about this book!
This was a really good book.
The book series goes as follows for those new to the series.1)The Rising: Author's Preferred Edition
2)City of the Dead: Author's Preferred Edition
3) The Rising: Selected Scenes from the End of the World
Please note that the authors preferred editions have added content and page length that was removed from the previous version.
I'll join in for the last book in the series, (if that's ok?) having recently re-read and really enjoyed the first two - especially The Rising. Hope you all get as a big a kick out of them as I did.

Have you read the two super hard to find side stories Kaisersoze? They are not required or included to this read, but they are still fun to talk about. The two in question are :
1) The Rising: Deliverance
and
2) The Rising: Necrophobia
They are basically just side stories that exist outside the main stories. Not needed to enjoy the overall experience, they only serve to enrich the lore and mythos.

Horror readers are some of the nicest people I know!! They understand good vs evil and they know what might just happen to them if they are not nice. Ha! I'm looking forward to reading and discussing with this group. Thank you for your warm welcomes!

You not got other books to read Pamallia ? It's just Jonathan is in another book read at the moment. So we needed to arrange a date which gave everyone time to join and also finish their current books.
Yeah. I'm sorry Pamellia. =( I should be done with my other buddy read very soon.I should warn anyone who is on the fence about reading this book that there is at least one brutal instance of rape in this book. Being that this is a post apocalyptic book, it might not come as a surprise to some who are familiar with the genre.
I just wanted to do the responsible thing and warn those who may be triggered by the dark subject matter. I also want to add this isn't one of those crumby novels where rape is condoned either. Brian Keene himself has publicly expressed himself that Rape is a serious subject that should be handled responsibly in books.

I was thinking about trying to squeeze them both into this buddy read when we start the third book together. lol.
I found The Rising: Necrophobia for around 40 dollars if you are interested.

I've read books by Brian Keene before. Gory books don't bother me.

Although I stated we recommend using the authors preferred edition for this buddy read, this does not mean if you have a alternate version that you can not join us. We accept all Editions of the Rising :-)

Because I am retired (well actually before I retired) I read in a few groups at the same time. One group reads a book ever week, one each month and I pick up a few buddy reads here and there. I've read 90 books this year.
I might not like all the blood and guts in our read, but that's OK, I'll sort of skip over it if it's really bad or read and weep! Ha! Not a big fan of blood and guts, but I am a big fan of zombie genre...so it's give and take for me.
Thanks for the heads up about the rape. I'm sure many people are sensitive about that subject and really would rather not read it. It's not a genre I would look for to read all the time, but this may be OK for me.
I am not looking forward to the zombie birds. It's OK, but normally I prefer the zombie universe to only include humans.
Having said all that, I still want to be part of this read. I'd rather wait and see...if it's something I really cannot stand, then I might have to excuse myself, but I'd rather try with the real thing.

I've probably read 50 different zombie books. I'm reading a series right now Dark Recollections. The final book in the series is due out in October sometime. It's a good story, but there are several grammar errors. These are a few I have read:
Year One, an interesting series where I.T. people at Google survive and keep the internet going. Setting is Kentucky and the protagonist stays in his home and builds up a fortress in his subdivision.
Contagious, female protagonist. Military has an underground bunker. I've been waiting for the 3rd book in this series for so long and it was released this week. I don't think I'm interested any longer.
When There's No More Room in Hell: A Zombie Novel, set in England and a 3 book series. 2 brothers, one in England and one in Iran (?) long to be bring their families together after the zombies hit. Very good story, outstanding ending, IMO
George's Terms, set in USA. Pretty good story, but I don't recall how well written it was
Escape from Sobibor, by David Fischler. Nazis vs zombies. LOL This was a short story that I think was written rather quickly. Not a lot of advertisement on this one as I can't find a link to the book.
Kings of the Dead. If I remember correctly, this one the protagonist travels very far to reach a safe underground bunker. (I might have it mixed up with another one??) I like this one because the story is contained in one book *SHOCK* and the story continues after the zombie are under control and certain parts of the country are civilized once again. I think this is the one. It was a very good story.
The Gathering Dead, wonderful military story. There is an ending to the epidemic after a few novels. I liked it a lot and for me purchasing the books was worth it. I don't recall if there were grammar errors.
The Remaining, Captain Lee Hardin of the United States Army is part of a special forces unit set up to keep order after any major disaster that breaks down the government. What a story. Sometimes I feel like the idea of this story is actually better than the story itself. But it's good. Still waiting on the final books, however. This is suppose to be made into a movie, but I don't know when it's to be released.
Zombie Fallout, Long distance traveling during the beginnings of the zombie takeover. Several books in the series. A weird vampire is part of this one. I felt the story was added to when it wasn't necessary and I felt that was being done to increase sales. There have been a few spin offs of this one. The next and final one is a cute story
The Book of Riley: A Zombie Tale...what could be cuter than two dogs and a cat protecting a teenager and baby as they make their way across the country during the beginnings of the zombie apocalypse!! aww....I think there are 4 novellas in this series. The story could have been one book...like I said, trying to make money off some success...It's the American way!! God bless the USA!
That's all for now. I've read many more, but all of these either stand alone novels or series.

I'm glad that article to Brian Keene's blog could help. I think he is a great guy with great values. I didn't want people to get the wrong idea about him based on one scene in the book.
I haven't read as many zombie novels as you Pamellia.
The only ones I can think of are
1) Autumn
2) Dead City
3) The Last Zombie
Out of all of them I liked The Last Zombie the best. Mainly because of the cameo from one of the characters from The Rising in it. (Frankie) Also it's the only book that takes place after the zombie apocalypse is over and finished. I won't spoil anymore for anyone who wants to read it, but this book has very very little zombies in it. Very original I thought!!
Hey everyone Id like to join in too. Ive only read one other book by Brian Keene - Jack's Magic Beans but the rising has been on my TBR for ages. One of my fav genres is zombies, Ive reading (and watching) my way through the Walking Dead series. Loved the Hater series by David Moody.
I like to think if ever there was a zombie apocalypse Id be this kick ass Resident Evil chick. My husband reckons im useless in a crisis and would be the first one eaten!

If you can handle the over the top grotesque horror of Jack's Magic Beans then The Rising shouldn't bother you too much. It's very much fast paced and with very little restraint in the same way Jack's Magic Beans was. I thought Jack's Magic Beans was a lot of fun and I was really glad to have read it. It was every bit of what I thought it was going to be. 
I didnt think Jack's Magic Beans was as gross out as an Edward Lee book I read, there is images in there i dont think i will ever get out of my head.
