Anacrea | 7 comments This is a book I read years ago as a kid, and unfortunately a lot of my memories of it are fairly hazy, but I hope you can help.

The book is about a tribe of people that rely on horses, but women aren't allowed to ride and are generally considered inferior. The main character is a woman, she learns to ride, and eventually escapes the rest of the tribe. I think she becomes a shaman or something like that, and I distinctly remember a scene in which she drinks out of a cup she made from someone's skull.

What year did you read it? What age range do you think it was aimed at - middle grade, young adult, younger than middle grade?

Is it fantasy? Set in some made-up land? Or set in a real place and time, like the American Southwest?

Anacrea | 7 comments It's definitely not a book for kids; it has sexual themes and violence and some other things. Maybe young adult? I'm not sure what year I read it in, sorry, sometime after 2005 probably.

Anacrea | 7 comments It's completely fiction, think there are probably fantastic elements to it.

Anacrea | 7 comments Oh, wow, the description for this book sounds really similar, but no, I don't think so, thank you though. She wasn't a knight, and if it was in a series it must have been the first book.

Anacrea | 7 comments Also not Shiva. She was a bit older, I think, and horses were a REALLY IMPORTANT theme in the book. Thanks again though.

Michele | 279 comments Sounds like a culture similar to the Mongols or the Huns? I have no idea, but that might give a direction for searching.

Anacrea | 7 comments "Scorpio Races" is too new of a book; I read this years ago. It's not Dark Horse, but thanks for both of the suggestions!

You're right in that the culture was similar to the Mongols or Huns, but I don't think it was actually either of them as it was a fiction book.
