Kim Rox | 41 comments How about "The Dark" by James Herbert.

message 58: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (brandiec) | 229 comments I vote for Dark Harvest, too. I don't know how much membership overlap there may be between HA and Paced Reading Horror & Thrillers (I belong to both Goodreads groups), but, just FYI, Paced Reading Horror did The Troop as a group read in June.

message 59: by ZoeyBB (new)

ZoeyBB (sjnovak3) | 95 comments Dark harvest!

message 60: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Thurston | 6 comments Rest Area by Frank Cereo

Being Halloween, scary books, killers, I think this would be a great read for this group. I have read it before and it was good.

message 61: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5112 comments The Entity sounds great! I'd vote for that one.

message 62: by kento (new)

kento (daechwita) | 2 comments I suggest Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

message 63: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (rachelunabridged) | 589 comments I've been wanting to read Summer of Night by Dan Simmons by Dan Simmons

message 64: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Gunst | 4 comments I went out on a limb and bought the troop by John Cutter today after looking at the all the votes even if it doesn't get picked I am excited to read it this month needless to say it has my vote

message 65: by Katy (new)

Katy Mann | 988 comments Cassie wrote: "If you mean this Dark Harvest, it's amazing!"

I'm seconding (or thirding) Norman Partridge's Dark Harvest, from earlier in the thread.

Dark Harvest by Norman Partridge

message 66: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | -2 comments I think the troop sounds really interesting

message 67: by Sage (new)

Sage (goodreadscomsage_a) | 2 comments Many people have suggested "The Troop" and that sounds like a good one.The Troop

message 68: by Jamison (new)

Jamison I had intended on finally sitting down with Partridge's Dark Harvest this month anyhow. I'm thrilled to see so many interested. That's my vote.

message 69: by Josh (new)

Josh Berlin | 2 comments How about a pure classic Horror novel such as The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty, it's got thrills, spills and a spider walk. First published in 1971, being near forty five years ago now, it's well and truly earned its way into history and into the minds of generations of readers and later viewers of the film. I believe that it would be a great way to honor not only the impact which this novel has had, but also William Peter Blatty's genius by reading this book again this Halloween season.

message 70: by Wil (new)

Wil Hooper (Wil_hoops2013) | 2 comments How about John Dies at the End? Not really a straight-forward horror novel. It is a perfect blend of horror/comedy though.

message 71: by Joe (last edited Sep 18, 2014 01:28AM) (new)

Joe I've read The Troop and The Exorcist. The Entity is a great suggestion but very difficult to find carried in a library. What about

description

message 72: by Walter (new)

Walter Spence (walterspence) | 573 comments I agree with what someone said further upstream in the thread in reply to the first question, what kind of book to read. Fall has three months, but Halloween comes but once a year. Will there be a poll as to which kind of read to do before a poll is done to pick the actual book?

If we do a Halloween book, one I've seen that looks interesting is:

Gods of The Nowhere A Novel of Halloween by James Tipper
Gods of The Nowhere: A Novel of Halloween.

message 73: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Reynolds (graemereynolds) | 96 comments Given that he recently lost his battle with cancer, I suggest either The Tooth Fairy or The Year of the Ladybird by Graham Joyce

message 74: by Holly (new)

Holly (goldikova) With so many diverse selections I was inspired......why not have our fearless moderator Jon Recluse select our October group read? He has excellent taste and would choose a wonderful book we might not discover otherwise.

Just a thought!

message 75: by Brian (new)

Brian Kenny | 3 comments Bird Box by Josh Malerman is very good, and very scary to boot.

message 76: by Mark (last edited Sep 18, 2014 04:43AM) (new)

Mark McLaughlin (mark_mclaughlin) | 66 comments Autumn... A time for tentacles and cosmic abominations. I nominate the Lovecraftian horrors of Best Little Witch-House in Arkham by Mark McLaughlin Best Little Witch-House in Arkham. :-)

message 77: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 59 comments Exorcist, Dark Harvest, or House of Leaves! Any of those would be great!

message 78: by Katy (new)

Katy Mann | 988 comments Brian wrote: "Bird Box by Josh Malerman is very good, and very scary to boot."

Brian, Bird Box is a scary one. We read that as the group read in August. Thread is pretty active, if you want to add a note.

message 79: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Higdon What about Brian Keene's Urban Gothic, Or Maybe one of his series?

message 80: by Robert (new)

Robert Mingee (robertmingee) | 776 comments Christopher wrote: "What about Brian Keene's Urban Gothic, Or Maybe one of his series?"

Ghost Walk would fit the theme (but that's not an official nomination since I already made one :-)

message 81: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Joss (sharon_joss) For me, the book that has it all for Halloween is Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes". Similarly, Dan Simmon's "Summer of Night" is a recent read I loved almost as much.

message 82: by Monica (new)

Monica Go | 902 comments Have you ever done a group read of Ghost story by Peter Straub?

message 83: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Ghost Story! One of the two scariest books I ever read!

message 84: by Robert (new)

Robert Kratky (bolorkay) | 342 comments How about one story by either Poe or M.R. James ?

message 85: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Another great author I discovered was William Hope Hodgson, very Lovecraftian.

message 86: by Monica (new)

Monica Go | 902 comments Oh damn you did read Ghost story in December :(

Christopher Higdon Robert wrote: "Christopher wrote: "What about Brian Keene's Urban Gothic, Or Maybe one of his series?"

I would support this! thats one I havnt read yet :)

message 88: by Joe (new)

Joe Sharon's picks (Something Wicked This Way Comes, Summer of Night) have been my favorite ideas so far. Ghost Story would've been excellent as well. I'm old school. I'm sure there's entertaining horror fiction written in the last 25 years but I'd prefer to read those last.

message 89: by Will (last edited Sep 22, 2014 05:32AM) (new)

Will Pritchard | 2 comments I recently read Dogstar. It is pretty mad. I would describe as thus: A Clockwork Orange and Trainspotting had a satanic lovechild, that lovechild was given the Quentin Tarantino treatment, oh and it is all about werewolves. I honestly thought the book was brilliant. If you want to read a truly original piece of work from a new, exciting author I would read Dogstar for sure.
