Just seen this, after doing another google search to see if I can find the book (it's stayed at the back of my mind as an unsolved mystery!) and rejoined the group to say thank you! That is indeed the book. 😊

(view spoiler)[Eventually the children discover that the blobs are from another planet, and they have come to earth to steal human teeth, as they don't have teeth themselves. One of the children has a loose tooth, so pulls it out and gives it to one of the blobs, convincing him that if all the blobs go back to their planet without teeth, this blob can be their leader, as he's the only one with a tooth. The blob likes the sound of that, sticks the tooth in his mouth, and gets all the blobs to return to their planet, and humans are therefore saved from having all their teeth stolen. (hide spoiler)]
I read this book about thirty years ago - it was probably quite a recent book at the time, as it was a shiny, colourful library book in good condition. It was a big hardback book, with a white cover with a picture of a child looking down at the pavement at a blob. The illustrations were line drawings with watercolour, I think - and the text was at the bottom of the page. Probably aimed at 7-10 year olds. I think it was a British book.
