The main characters were cats that were sentient. There were no humans to my memory.
I think they lived in clans. I remember that the male had a spiked penis and it caused the female pain (some things somehow stick in a teenagers mind)
I also remember that one of the cats, not sure if it was the main character, had kittens that weren't sentient, that were just animals, and I think the father admitted that happened in his bloodline sometimes.
