About a virus that had been released that swapped out the genes of any organism it infected with other organisms. I do recall that one of the plotlines was about a guy that discovered his dog had been modified with humanlike intelligence, and while it couldn't talk, it would nod or shake it's head in response to a yes or no question. I remember a specific scene, right after he discovered his dogs intelligence he and the dog were in his backyard, and the dog dug up a message or possibly a box with something that had been left for him, years ago. If it helps, I thought that it was Michael Crichton's Next, but I recently re-read that, and it's not. Possibly it was published around the same time.

Not positive since I don't remember the specific scene mentioned, but it sounds similar to Fear Nothing by Koontz -- he does like his smart dogs. What frustrates me is I've wanted the third Moonlight Bay book forever and I don't believe it's ever going to be written.
It doesn't look like either of those, but thanks for the help

As promised. First Bump, sorry to be early, but this is the date I bump my search. Will bump this every 30 days, together with my own search. May not be the exact every time, but will try for less than 45 days.
I can think of a couple that involve gene swapping but nothing with a dog unfortunately.
The Cobra Event. I haven't read it myself, just heard about it on a reading podcast and put it on my too read list.
Although I am not the OP, I am interested in this thread. Read Cobra Event twice, highly recommended. Creepy ending, but am quite sure this is not the book searched for, as there is no (sub-) plot / thread about an intelligent dog there.
In my review for Cobra Event I mention Quantico, which since then I read again and I have changed, it was not as gripping as I remember, maybe because the threats of terrorism are more real.
So, while I still recommend Cobra Event, I do not recommend Quantico anymore, at least not as a gripping-page-turner thriller, more like a could have been scenario, flat people, and bit by the numbers.
Also I still would like to put the book on my TBR that the OP was searching for.
It looks like a standalone. However, he has written other non fiction books about virus's.

Possibly Seize the Night by Dean Koontz? The blurb doesn't discuss gene transfer, but this post on reddit says it includes a virus that causes human/animal gene transfer.

Might check out the book but not sure how soon.

A very long shot, but there is an older novella by Harlan Ellison that is about...well, a boy and his telepathic dog in a post-apocalyptic world. The dog was bio-engineered, but I'm not sure about the virus part, but the dog doesn't speak, so there's that...Here is the link: A Boy and His Dog

Bump for June (Pfingstmontag - Pfingsmonday, some kind of christian holiday in Germany, shops are closed, no stock-market etc. ), making this a long-weekend for the workforce. Being retired and no christian, I barely notice it.
Is the original poster still around? If not, we will never know if we find the right book, so... kind of pointless to keep guessing.

There is also a good chance that I might stumble into it by accident, as I tend to read such books.
