One of our current series, Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, will be finished at the end of September. (We are reading the final book during August & September.) Our other series, Witcher, might also finish at the end of September, depending on if the group stops after Baptism of Fire or continues with 2 other books in the series (The Tower of the Swallow and Lady of the Lake.

So, I am opening nominations for series to follow one or both of our current series. (Maggie, the other mod, and I will figure that out as we take nominations, and you will know before the polls open if we are choosing one or two series.)

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
Rules for nominating a series:
1. The series must be complete.
2. The series must be fantasy (I know, seems obvious).
3. The series should not be targeted mainly for middle school or a YA audience.
4. The series must not have been one the group has already read. Look through the website or the group bookshelf to see if we’ve read it before.
5. Each member may nominate one series. Please tell us the name of the series, the author, and the first book in the series. If you want to add more information, please feel free.
6. Each member may second one series in addition to making a nomination.
7. In order to move into the polling, a nomination must be seconded by someone other than the nominator.
8. Nominations will be open until August 14 (2 weeks). We will then have a poll. If the results are close, we may have a run-off poll between or among the top vote-getters. ***Edited to add that the nomination period has been extended in hopes of generating a few more choices.

Nominations are open! Let’s go!
Thanks,
Kathi, for the mods

Nominated and seconded:
Karavans trilogy by Jennifer Roberson, starting with Karavans—3 books
The Deed of Paksenarrion series by Elizabeth Moon, starting with Sheepfarmer's Daughter—3 books
The Traitor Son Cycle by Miles Cameron, starting with The Red Knight—5 books
The Elric Saga by Michael Moorcock, starting with Elric of Melniboné —6 books in the “core” series, according to Goodreads. **NOTE** The group will need to determine which books to include in this series and the order in which to read them, as the series has been published, republished, added to, and rearranged several times over the years.
Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling, starting with Luck in the Shadows—7 books

Nominated but not yet seconded:
Dwarves series by Markus Heitz, starting with The Dwarves—5 books
Keeper Chronicles by Tanya Huff, starting with Summon the Keeper—3 books
Symphony of Ages series by Elizabeth Haydon, starting with Rhapsody: Child of Blood—3 books or 9 books
Inda series by Sherwood Smith, starting with Inda—4 books

Nominated but disqualified :

I will nominate the Karavans trilogy by Jennifer Roberson, starting with Karavans. I have read many of Roberson's other books, but not this series, and the group has not read any of her books.

Katy (kathy_h) | 207 comments I'll nominate The Deed of Paksenarrion Series by Elizabeth Moon
Starting with: Sheepfarmer's Daughter

And I will second the Karavans series

I nominate the traitor son cycle by Miles Cameran and I will second The Deed of Paksenarrion series

♥♫☻Olivia☻♫♥ (beobscureclearly) | 3 comments I nominate The Elric Saga by Michael Moorcock, first book is Elric of Melnibone: Elric of Melniboné
I've read only the first book a long time ago, and then life got in the way and I never picked it up again, but it was a pretty unique book and fun to read if I remember correctly.

♥♫☻Olivia☻♫♥ (beobscureclearly) | 3 comments I will second The Traitor Son Cycle

Our polls usually have a few more options, so I am going to leave nominations open for another few days in hopes of generating a bit more interest.

message 10: by Jenny Baker (new)

Jenny Baker (jennyrbaker) I'll second The Elric Saga, although it was difficult for me to locate the first volume when I read it earlier this year. I had to borrow it through inter-library loan.

message 11: by Shawna Z (new)

Shawna Z (shoezimm) I nominate the Keeper Chronicles by Tanya Huff. It’s a trilogy, set in a modern-day Canada with plenty of fantasy and humor along the way. The first in the series is Summon the Keeper.

message 12: by Kerry (new)

Kerry (rocalisa) | 50 comments I'll nominate The Symphony of Ages by Elizabeth Haydon. The first book is Rhapsody: Child of Blood. I read and enjoyed the first two (good grief, I looked it up) a decade ago and always wanted to finish. I'll need to go back to the beginning to remember the details.

message 13: by Sydney (new)

Sydney | 2 comments I nominate The Black Jewels trilogy by Anne Bishop. It starts with Daughter of the Blood. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6...

message 14: by Olivera (new)

Olivera | 2 comments I nominate Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling starting with Luck in the Shadows. I was going to nominate The Bone Doll's Twin, but I saw you've already read it and I loved her Tamir Triad books so I'm pretty Nightrunner is just as good.

Sydney, could you specify which part(s) of this series you are nominating? I am not familiar with these books and it appears there are 3 connected books, then a prequel and a book of connected short stories, then a book with the main character from the first 3 novels, and then a number of books in the same world but with other characters, including a book expected to be published next year.

If you are nominating the original trilogy, that’s fine. I will add it to the list. If you are nominations this whole series, then it would be disqualified according to our guidelines because it appears to not be completed yet.

Thanks for any clarification you can give.

I will second Nightrunner. I loved the Tamil Triad and am interested in reading more by this author.

John | 139 comments I might be a little too late to the party to get a second on this, but...

I'd like to nominate the series that starts with Inda by Sherwood Smith.

Given that it's less well-known, I'll say a few words about it.

My first impression of it was kind of "Ender's Game in a fantasy setting," in that the protagonist is a precociously brilliant tactician who goes to his country's military academy, but it's really a lot more than that. The strength of the book and the series is the depth of the characters and their relationships. I wouldn't call it Grimdark, but Sherwood Smith isn't afraid to kill off characters, and the effect is that you're really not sure who's going to make it to the end of the book, never mind the series (although you can imagine from the title that Inda himself has a good shot). The world-building is also good, particularly as it relates to the cultures shown. They're unique, with depth and verisimilitude.

I love Ender's Game, and this book sounds very interesting, I'll be adding it to my TBR, thanks for mentioning it. Sadly I can't second it since I already used that right once but hopefully someone else will :)

I received a message from member Richard, nominating the Deryni series by Katherine Kurtz. I asked him to make the nomination here in the group rather than via message, and to clarify if he is nominating all 16 books in that series or a specific arc or arcs.

I am also waiting for a response from Sydney regarding the nomination of the Black Jewels series, since I don’t know if only the original trilogy is being nominated or all 6 or 7 connected books.

Nominations will close tomorrow (Saturday, August 17]. I will post the poll on Sunday, August 18. If anyone who has not already seconded a series wants to use their second and get another option into the polls, do it soon!
