SOLVED. Man and woman marry, man's mother doesn't know, he hates old books. [s]

My mom read this book probably about a year ago. This is what she remembers happening (spoilers): This man and woman meet and fall in love, then get married. The man's dad is dead and his mom is very controlling so he doesn't tell her he is married. For some reason all the books he reads must be new, he doesn't want bent pages or an old smell. He goes out to the store on his bike to get his wife some cereal she had been craving. He is hit by a car and killed. When his wife shows up to the scene the cereal is scattered across the road. His mom finally finds out he was married and they meet and eventually become friends. His wife donates money to the library for a section of books in his name and tells them that whenever the books become worn out to replace them with new ones.
She doesn't remember anything about the cover, names or author, which isn't really helping my search. I hope someone know what this is!
