Big Bad Owl
A newly released book about a grumpy owl (I can definitely relate to him!) which will be really useful to use in KS1 if you're talking about dealing with emotions. Also, a good opportunity to practice silly voices on all the characters too.

A funny and ridiculous book for girls and boys to read recreationally. Jeremy Strong is a bit of a legend.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
by Andrew Lloyd Webber

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
E. B. White in this very touching novel tells us the story of Wilbur the pig. Wilbur is a weak, small pig. Therefore he is not welcomed in Mr, Arable"s farm. However, Fern, Mr, Arable's daughter persuades her father to not kill Wilbur and she promises that she will be raising him. After Ferns success in raising him, Wilbur gets big enough to be transferred to Mr. Zuckerman's farm where he meets his friend Charlotte the spider.
The story is being told in the animal's perspectives of view. It highlights the importance of the true friendship. charlotte and Wilbur and all the other animals in the barn work together to ruin Mr. Zuckerman's evil plan about Wilbur. Wilbur is being well fed to become the prize wining pig for the country fair. Eventually he does become the most famous pig in the country by the help of charlotte's astounding skill, which will cost her life.
The books shows reader that true friends sometimes will sacrifice everything they have, including their life to save their friends from danger without expecting anything in return.

Beware of Boys, by Tony Blundell is an useful fiction book for late KS1
and early KS2.
It is a great book to use to teach children the directions such as up, down, fro,to. it is also very useful when the teacher wants to do a lesson on giving instructions. all the instruction given in the book by the little boy can be used as a fun way of learning how to write instruction.
There is a considerable amount of illustrations used in the text to make it easier for the lover attainment readers to comprehend the text.
The books includes lots of humour, such as dialogs between the wolf and the little boy. The exciting illustrations with lots of colours are used to catch the readers attention and to keep them engaged with the text.

The step-sister's story by Kaye Umansky
A brilliant new perspective on the original Cinderella story which is funny and creative. Hearing the story from the view of the ugly sisters is gripping and eventful. A nice light-hearted read.

The Snake who Came to Stay - Julia Donaldson
A genuinely interesting story about pets and how to look after them. I found a strange likeness between Polly and myself...

I was there...alone in the trenches- Vince Cross
Published this year, coinciding with the mark of the centenary of WW1, I would recommend this book as further reading for a KS2 pupil interested and wanting to find out more about the war in a digestible child-friendly medium.

A nice book to introduce diversity to Reception and Year One children.

A lovely picture book, no morals or themes, just a great story, and would be fun to read outloud, or for new readers to tackle themselves

Dog thinks he has everything he needs until he meets Mouse and realises life is so much better with a friend!
Suitable for pre-school to Year 1, and could be used to talk about friendship.

Quite a funny yet dark book for such little kids, where the main character makes soup out of the babysitter.

A good story for KS1 to introduce lifecycles (caterpillar into a butterfly). Bright illustrations and kept my kids quiet on the carpet (miracle)

The pictures in this book, made from rich collages of natural and foraged materials, are absolutely beautiful. It adds so much depth and reality to the story, and helps you imagine you are there too in the Australian rainforest. The story is relatively simple, but has a complex meaning, so it can be read by younger and older children (and adults) and still have a relevance.
The story is about boy who goes on a day trip with his father to the rainforest. Once there his dad tells him a bit about the area, and the boy then goes exploring imagining what it used to be like, with dinosaurs and aborigines. at the end of the book, he wonders what it will be like in the future, and guesses it might be a holiday resort. on the back page, the author explains this is a real risk for the area if it is not protected. It is therefore a sobering reflection on how we treat the environment and is a good talking point with children.
I love this book. Even if I don't want to think too deeply, you can just stare into the pictures and wonder at this magical land (5/5)

Paddington goes on a trip to the tower of London with his red hat and suitcase of sandwiches. There he meets a beefeater, a raven, and learns about the tower. It's a lovely lighthearted book with some good play on words and little jokes.
I would use it in class as an introduction to London or the tower, and maybe ask the children to imagine if Paddington went to a local attraction to them to create a new book. (3/5)

Paddington has another day out with Mr Gruber, this time to Little Venice. Mr Gruber suggests he joins in with a competition to find as many items starting with the letter b their walk. As well as being a nice book to read, children could find all the items in the lovely pictures to make their own lists, or play the game in their garden or through the windows with different letters. This could also be used in phonics when doing the b sound. (3/5)

The children in my class love the twits as it's a bit rude and a bit naughty and a bit silly. its about a couple of people who are so mean and so nasty that they've become incredibly and disgusting ugly as a result. They live in a windowless house thinking of horrible things to do to each other and the animals they come into contact with.
Eventually the birds get their own back, and hatch a plan to despatch of the twits and avoid being made into Wednesday night bird pie.
This is a funny book, I love how Roald Dahl gets the balance perfect between being disgusting and yet just about having a moral message buried within to keep 'boring' grownups happy - I think kids like them because of this. In my reviews we're supposed to write how we could use them in class, but I would loathe to turn such a naughty book and a favourite of the children's into a good wholesome lesson. I think this is one to snigger at, and just show kids how much fun good books can be, without them realising how much I like it too! (4/5)

Diary of a wimpy kid reminds me of malcolm in the middle. Its written really informally, from the perspective of Greg who thinks he is much cooler and more deserving than he is. He gets into all sorts of embarrassing scrapes, and writes about these events in his diary in a way that suggests he never quite understands his own self-inflected misfortunes.
As an adult it makes you snigger, but I think I would have loved this as a 7 or 8 year old. As a teacher now I'm not sure thus is a book I could include in lessons, but I'd happily suggest it add a great reading for pleasure book to girls and boys. (3/5)

It's funny reading the reviews of this book as people seem to feel quite strongly about it. I thought it was great.
This book is about an 11 year old girl called Cedar growing up in a suburb in Australia. Her Dad died when she was young, and her brother is a runaway from boarding school. She doesn't really fit in at School but she's not really too fussed. Her Mum works hard as a mental health nurse, and Cedar is very much a child of her community. She is free spirited and curious.
I enjoyed the depth of characters, and watching the complexity of these characters develop through Cedar's eyes. It's a lovely book, I liked the wistful and poetic writing style, and it's interesting for a preteen book as I think it cleverly deals with how people make decisions. It shows how people make mistakes even though they are trying to do the right thing.
I enjoyed reading it as an adult, and would recommend it to mature KS2 or KS3 children. (5/5)

I found this book at the books for free shop in Stratford Mall. It really is a lovely resource as an introduction to Myths and Legends, as well as Greek Mythology. The stories are short and easy to read. Great for KS1 and KS2.

Review 10:
This book is part of the Dinosaurs Have Feelings, Too series.
Sophie Shyosaurus is a story about a little dinosaur who's very shy. The story goes through different scenarios and how Sophie reacts in these situations. Her dad tells her 'It's OK to feel shy', and suggests different ways for Sophie to overcome her shyness as she doesn't like the feeling.
The story is well illustrated and would be suitable for EY and KS1. This story would be good for exploring feelings of shyness, especially if there are pupils in the class who are shy. Pupils can relate to how Sophie is feeling (talking/sharing in front of the class and can't think of what to say). There are guidance notes at the back for parents and teachers on how to explore the notion of shyness, through talking activities, role play and other related books (e.g. Little Miss Shy or Shaun the Shy Shark).

A well illustrated, rhyming short story which looks at how Susan can do the same things as everyone else. The reader only finds out that she is in a wheelchair at the end of the book. Ideal for EYFS and KS1 as a way to look at inclusion and to address misconceptions.
