Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Good morning guys.
@Beth - the rules state that each member must read a book for the countdown or they lose points.

message 152: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Yeah, so if Chafic can finish any of the ten books he can swap himself in for that spot. This week the rest of us have it covered. If It is dragging (and I remember that I thought the middle went in circles for a bit) he can swap out for something short.

The 1001 list has some short books and some kids books that would be a super fast read! I saw:

There are some short books on the 1001 list!
- The Pit and the Pendulum (about 100 pages)
- Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (about 100 pages and illustrated)
- Call of the Wild
- Murder of Roger Ackroyd (Agatha Christie mystery, which are fast)
- Little Prince (short and also good)
- Thank You Jeeves
- Pippi Longstocking (short kids book)
- Animal Farm
- Thirteen Clocks.
- Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (a fast read if you like Douglas Adams)

Beth | 1659 comments Wait, I can stop panicking. The Countdown for acid burns has been announced, and we have until Wednesday:

https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...

Chafic, I did finish my book club book, so if you want to swap tasks you still can, but I'm not all frazzled about it! Sorry.

So do we want to try to get some points using Regeneration? Does anyone participate in BOM discussions? Should we look at our page numbers to see if we can build a ladder?

message 154: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Assuming that the links are to the correct edition of the book, we have these pages counts. If you've read other books besides the ones for this challenge that fit (in that you started and finished them in Round 2) we can add them.

Side Jobs: 433
Our Kind of Traitor : 306

Voices of the Fall: 336
Last Scene Alive: 256

This is not very ladder-like -- everything ends in 6!

Last Chance
The Desperate Mission
The Little Prince
Texas
The Durango Affair
My Sister the Serial Killer

(Books have to be at least 250 pages for a ladder rung)

Chafic (Rello) (irrell) | 35 comments Sorry fr the late update team - been treavelling back and forth between cities.

I do have a copy of Alice in Wonderland somewhere, I've been meaning to read that. I'll probably take it with me and have it as a backup in case I feel myself faltering.

But we have enough time I believe before the floor turns acid

Edit: I pretty much stayed up all night and now I can't sleep - this book is too good. Will finish it by today.

message 156: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments I have finished a book today. Does it count?

message 157: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments We can't use it for the usual stuff, but if it has more than 250 pages we could try to make a ladder of books to win back some of the points we lost in Round 1. We need a chain of books where the pages numbers match up, like:

354 pages ==> 455 pp ==> 542 pp ==>> 247 pp .

So far we have:
Side Jobs: Stories from the Dresden Files 433 pp ==> Our Kind of Traitor: 306 pp

So if your book's page count ends with 4 we could add it at the front, and if it had six hundred pages we could add it at the back.

Beth | 1659 comments OK, the spreadsheet is updated -- We are GO for Safe Zone!

I think the next objective is to spell out ACID (Safe Zone Group 1). I've got a book read by another team for A. It also works for I but Maritza had something in mind for that -- do you still have that book?

We still need C and D, and ideally we'd finish these in the next three days.

Then we can spell out other words from the countdown. We can start reading books for this now, but we can't FINISH them until after we spell out ACID. Any ideas for what words to go for?

Meanwhile if you finish books >250 pages you can try to fit them into a ladder on the REGENERATION page.

message 159: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Finished
304 pgs
Run and Hide by Alan McDermott
09/02/19****

message 160: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments OK, so we can make a ladder if anyone reads a book with a page count that ends in 3 or starts with 6!

message 161: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments The books were 400 and 419 pages

message 162: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments okay, please let me know what we still need. I am struggling to understand the spreadsheet. I have the following books I'm finishing this week:

Liar Liar (probably finished by Thu AEST)
The Secret Garden (will finish today - Wed AEST)

Can you use this somewhere?

message 163: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments The spreadsheet is pretty amazing, isn't it? It's hard to read it; I'm in awe of whoever MADE it.

Since we've finished the stuff in the COUNTDOWN stage on top, we get to pick where we go next. There are three Groups: 1, 2, and 3. We can be reading books for all the groups at the same time, but we can't finish them out of order.

Currently (since you guys are letting me pick these things, I guess) we are going for Group 1. We have to spell out ACID. Maritza and I have picked out letters A and I. Chava's The Secret Garden will work for D because Dickon is a major character.

We still need a C.

(One book in Group one has to be special, but that's already covered if I finish my book. It was used by another team.)

Once we finish all four Group 1 books we can start finishing books for either Group 2 or Group 3. Group 2 books are really hard to find. No one has signed up for any, so I say let's skip them.

Group 3 books are Spell-It-Out books where we pick the words we want from the COUNTDOWN tasks. Chava, if you hold off reading the last page of Liar Liar until we finish the Group 1 books, we could use it there. You could propose we spell out "LIST" from Task 1 and use it for L or something. Then we try to finish spelling out the word you picked.

Is this long enough? MEANWHILE, there's a regeneration tab where we can try to build a ladder to win back lost points. I figure if we get lucky and do it by accident then great but otherwise forget it. But that's why i keep asking about page count.

I can do C, because Liar Liar has 2 authors: James Patterson and Candice Fox

Beth | 1659 comments We have a plan! I'm excited to be a part of this plan. I will attempt to finish my book on Wednesday.

message 166: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments so because I'm rather thick, what's the plan??? LOL thanks (2 plans mentioned above, which are we picking)

message 167: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments will finish I book later today.

message 168: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments We are spelling out ACID with the four books:

Iron and Magic, Ilona Andrews
Liar Liar, by Candace somebody or other
Impasse
The Secret Garden, starring Dickon

Meanwhile we try not to finish anything else until these are all done.

message 169: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments For Spell - Out we should try for the following words as they are high point count.

Written or Tin - so if we can at least try for Tin we can then try to finish Writ - if that makes sense.

message 170: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments I’ve finished The secret garden!!

message 171: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Can you update. I’m not near a computer.

message 172: by Beth (last edited Sep 04, 2019 06:35PM) (new)

Beth | 1659 comments OK, I added the Secret Garden. Did you like it? It was one of my favorites when I was a kid. I really emphasized with Mary when she was in her bratty stage.

Back to my book!

P.S. Chafic -- it looks like the link to your book It fell off. When you get a chance, can you update the spreadsheet? Because it links up with The Secret Garden to give up a complete ladder. I think.

message 173: by Maritza (last edited Sep 04, 2019 08:11PM) (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Finished and updated ss.
Started book that fits T or W

message 174: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Finished and updated spreadsheet.

Started book that fits T. I'm not completely sure when I can finish it though, so I put that doubt in the notes for the book.

If we finish WRITTEN we will have exceeded MAGMA (our team level) expectations. Does anyone understand the rules around that? Of course, it might not be an issue.

message 175: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments @ Beth - as per our ss we are signed up as Molten so were are still good (I think).

Couldn't sleep so updated ss for you.

Need to correct ss for the book that Chafic finished in countdown or I fear we will get penalized. I couldn't find link.

message 178: by Chafic (new)

Chafic (Rello) (irrell) | 35 comments Updated the spreadsheet with the link.

I've been a little MIA for a few days. Sorry for the late reply :) I'll check in later tonight to figure out what my next reads are.

message 179: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments I'm thinking we may not finish WRITTEN -- the new countdown is up and we have to be done by this weekend.

Should we try for WITH? That's in task 10.

I'm pretty sure I can finish my T -- can we get an I and an H?

message 180: by Beth (last edited Sep 07, 2019 03:17PM) (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Also, this is a good time to look over the tasks for Group 3 and claim your first book.

Chava is on the ball here!

message 181: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments I signed up for

* Task 1 because it was on my TBR list, and then I found a mystery that fit

* Task 7 but that one has to be sent to my library so if someone has been wanting to read a Stephanie Plum mystery feel free to grab that spot and I'll find something else to read.

message 182: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments I finished
Zero Hour: Zero Tolerance Prequel
By - Autumn Jones Lake
Read - 09/07/19
Fits - character Lilly or author A L

message 183: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments @Chafic - do you have any preference for next weeks tasks?

message 184: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments I switched to task 10 (from task 1) because I have to read that book by Friday for a book club anyway. But I am flexible if someone wants me to shift!

message 185: by Beth (last edited Sep 08, 2019 12:37AM) (new)

Beth | 1659 comments I think I can finish an "H" book before the deadline, giving us W-TH.
Does anyone have an I?

Maritza, worst case your book is "A" (task 10). Do you want me to put that in the spreadsheet?

message 186: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Sure. I was trying to see where it would fit.

message 187: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Yeah, I'm terrible at flexible anagrams.

My book can be A, T, C, H, or P if that helps. And the one I'm trying to finish for WITH could be: N, M, A, R, or H.

Shout out if you come up with something smarter!

message 188: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments In eight hours from now I'll be in bed, so right before then I'll look at what we finished and try to make words out of it. That's 23:00 PDT (West coast of the US).

Unless someone will be around after that to do that? Unless I hear differently that will be our team deadline.

message 189: by Beth (last edited Sep 08, 2019 09:45PM) (new)

Beth | 1659 comments So far I see we can make the word "THAN". (Task 4) Any other ideas?

message 190: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments By the way, it looks like my detective book won't work -- it has to be a professional detective, not just someone who solves crimes. I actually have One for the Money on my shelves -- does anyone know if the main character Stephanie Plum is a detective? The description says she is but it also says she's a bounty hunter. Does she solve crimes for a living?

If not does anyone else have a book with a professional detective whose initials appear in POISON?

message 191: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments No she is a Bounty Hunter.

message 192: by Beth (last edited Sep 10, 2019 01:02AM) (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Then I got nothing. I hope someone finds a detective!

Although seeing as a bounty hunter by definition is someone who finds people on the run from the law, which is one of the jobs of a detective, I'm not sure what the difference is.

I'm happy to try for this one. I think I have one in Redemption Point with DI Pip Sweeney - P and S are in PoiSon. Does that fit?

message 194: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Perfect!

message 195: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Hi guys. Just a heads up - this is looking like a slow reading week to me. I'm just not in the mood. Will finish my third in series book and re-evaluate.

message 196: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Yeah, I'm moving slow too. I'm working on my crime book and I have a fast 1980's book lined up and possibilities for all the rest (except detective!) but things aren't moving too quickly. Since I'm moving so slowly I don't want to block things off in the spreadsheet since Chafic hasn't picked his first book yet.

I've been getting an extra book in from an audio but this week I'm barely even running errands so my car / audio time is limited.

message 197: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Uh oh, they announced the countdown. It's in 3 days and 4 hours.

I think we are in trouble this round!

message 198: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Okay finished book and will work on Flowers book. Was trying to find Scandanavian book but noooo.

message 199: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Finished book, started 1980's book.

Realized The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was actually published in 1980 so switched to sequel The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

message 200: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Chafic -- have you started a book? Do you want me to update the spreadsheet for you?
