Written from the perspective of the elder of 2 brothers, set (I think) on an isolated American ranch. Their parents just vanish one day, and they are left alone with some minor care from a maid.
The elder brother soon discovers that hidden under their house is a space teleportation station, that aliens regularly come through as another jump/ warp-point along their interstellar journeys. It used to be run by the father, and the book is all about the elder brother getting to grips with managing it and eventually finding himself well suited to the role, whilst searchig for a sign of their missing parents.
The younger brother serves mainly as comic relief, he's young and immature- the sort that hunts bugs and plays around with a chainsaw.
