SOLVED!! I thought the title was "Jane" but haven't found it using that. I read it in 2006. I think it was a paperback. Jane is the main character. She lives in California, I think near Stanford. She marries an astronomer who develops cancer, which he beats after several people start to pray for him (I think around the world). It's possible there was either estrangement with her mother or a difficult relationship. I also think the cover was some sort of shade of blue or aqua.
