SOLVED: Middle grade book girl lost on a raft in the ocean [s]

Ok, I had so much fun with finding the last book on here, I thought I'd try again.

I remember reading this book when I was in elementary school, which would be in the late 80's/early 90's - possibly 1988-1992. It was a chapter book about a girl and her stepbrother going on a family vacation to the beach. I think they didn't know each other very well, or they really dislike each other.

Ok, I am not 100% sure about the plot, but here's what I think I remember. The girl has a fight with her stepbrother, goes out in the ocean on a raft, and falls asleep. When she wakes up, she can't see the shore anymore. She eventually gets rescued, and it turns out her stepbrother was important in the rescue attempt somehow. So then, they don't hate each other anymore.

I don't remember the cover very well. I have an impression that it had a yellow spine with a picture on the front of the girl on the raft, but that is really vague.

I think this is The Animal The Vegetable John D. Jones by Betsy Byars. I LOVED this book.
