Alysa H. | 3840 comments OMG, chapter 9, when da Silva is missing and Curtis finds him in the cave? Now I know why this book is shelved as “suspense”...
😮

Jenny | 8052 comments Right? That was intense. Never tell strangers (or new nefarious acquaintances) about your phobias. Good rule.

The anti gay, anti Jewish sentiments that run through some of the characters in this book are jarring. And then, to realize that that crap is still around today, is disheartening.

My favorite thing about this book, I think, is the two people moving past their own preconceived notions of each other.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I just finished Chapter 13. I will probably finish the book during lunch in a few hours.

So earlier we were saying that Curtis was not the next James Bond? Well he definitely got better. And apart from da Silva, so much of his “training” has been down to a pair of awesome women! Pat and Fen: I want a spin-off! I don’t necessarily mind when an MM romance is so focused on the boys that female characters are mostly absent (as long as the book is not misogynistic), but it’s even better when there are great women around too.

@Jenny, I agree with you about preconceived notions.
On that note, is it not soooooo obvious from the start that Curtis’ “uncles” are also gay? I mean, wow, Curtis can be thick. 🙄

Jenny | 8052 comments He does seem to have a steep learning curve.
I love Pat and Fen. If the author hasn't written a book about them, she should.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments She has now written a book about them (Pat and Fen), but not sure how it is since I haven't read it and wasn't that interested in it. People keep waiting for a sequel to this one which she plans but never has yet. Ah, the muse of writing.

Her other stuff is good - you may want to try out the Magpie Lord series - that trilogy, and this book, are among her favorites with groups. Her other stuff is more serious and less humor/cuteness put in, if that makes sense.

He does have the soldier, tough guy thing down pat and comes alive in that role when he "steps up" and stands firm.

I like both the characters - they're different but both good people and it just seems to work.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Stands firm, huh?

*I am clearly twelve*

Jenny | 8052 comments Teehee

Jenny | 8052 comments It cracks me up that there is so much "non-gay" playing around at boarding schools and in the military. Since I went to a public school, I don't know what it is like to be surrounded by just one sex. But, even if I had gone to an all girls school, and if I had experimented with other girls, and enjoyed it, I would probably consider myself bi. But, from what I have read and heard over the years, the same boys who "experiment" are the ones who are so vociferously anti-gay.
I love them, but I will never understand men. Just saying.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I just finished. That was so good! 5 stars.
I'm impressed with how well the witty banter was kept up right through to the end. As Curtis said, Daniel da Silva is a "black mamba" for sure!

I will definitely read more from this author. I had some stuff on my TBR but it'll have to move up in priority. :)

(I guess I was wrong about the "gay uncles" but I supposed it can still be read that way if you squint hard...)

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Yeah I wasn't sure where you were getting that idea, but it's not a bad idea. I think there was a short story as an extra about these guys too but I'll have to dig it up and find the source, think it was a freebie.

I also had rated it five stars Alysa, glad you loved it so much, and glad you enjoyed it as well Jenny! :) At least I don't feel bad having you two read a book you'd end up hating or something, you never know.

There's several mentions of Curtis being raised by his "uncles" who are presumably unmarried, and close friends. And that's usually thinly veiled reference to gay couple in this sort of context. When Curtis was worried near the end about the Foreign Office being given the incriminating photos of him and Daniel, I was convinced that Curtis' uncle would be given the photos and be all, "Oh my boy, never fear, I have been in your shoes!" or something like that.

Jenny | 8052 comments Thanks for the recommendation Erin. That was fun.

Alysa, I had the gay uncle thought for a minute as well.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Reading it that way, I can see where you came up with the theory from. Wouldn't have been a bad thing for the author to put in the story.
