This thread is open for discussion about Think of England by K.J. Charles

Lie back and think of England…

England, 1904. Two years ago, Captain Archie Curtis lost his friends, fingers, and future to a terrible military accident. Alone, purposeless and angry, Curtis is determined to discover if he and his comrades were the victims of fate, or of sabotage.

Curtis’s search takes him to an isolated, ultra-modern country house, where he meets and instantly clashes with fellow guest Daniel da Silva. Effete, decadent, foreign, and all-too-obviously queer, the sophisticated poet is everything the straightforward British officer fears and distrusts.

As events unfold, Curtis realizes that Daniel has his own secret intentions. And there’s something else they share—a mounting sexual tension that leaves Curtis reeling.

As the house party’s elegant facade cracks to reveal treachery, blackmail and murder, Curtis finds himself needing clever, dark-eyed Daniel as he has never needed a man before…

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Joining in on this re-read - thanks for the suggestion, Alysa and The Color Purple. Had planned to re-read it anyway, been years and I was in the mood for it lately, so perfect timing :0)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments This will be fun!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Yes, I'm excited! :)

Tomorrow night officially we start discussing? Do you want us to go by chapters at a time, or read at own pace, or....?

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Jenny wrote: "Just bought it. I am in."

Yay!!

This trio for our buddy read will be fun, glad Alysa thought of it.

Hopefully you both don't hate the book now that I've so highly recommended it though. #pressure

Jenny | 8050 comments Oh, we will be judging your taste, no way around that. Teehee.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I guess we can start any time tomorrow. I would say, read at our own pace and comment whenever the urge takes us, but maybe let’s not read/discuss more than 1/2 before deciding when we wanna finish (i.e., based on Wheel words)?
Also, I think you both read faster than me, and I don’t want spoilers 😊

Alysa H. | 3840 comments @Erin, I just sent you a rec for another book you will probably love if you love this one. It is one of my favorite books of all time.
So, you can judge me too! : The God in Flight

I'll probably start in the morning (for me) tomorrow, and read half-ish. We can put stuff under spoiler tags if needed.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Jenny wrote: "Oh, we will be judging your taste, no way around that. Teehee."

This is why I need to make good impression :p

There are some scenes that I'd love to discuss that stand out in the book, which is why I was hesitant to jump ahead of each other TOO quickly.

How about we can figure it in 1/4ths or something (not on the dot, but semi), just make sure to drop in the thread with a comment or two at least every few chapters? That way it should coordinate fine.

It actually sounds interesting, will buy now and check it out. =)

I wish everyone would buy that book! I wish I could just shove money at this author and get another book. Unfortunately, it's the only book she's ever published to date, and it's from 1995. It's new publisher announced they were putting out a short story collection of hers in 2017, but it did not happen. *sad*

It's probably the only book I would be down to re-read in the near future, if y'all are interested in another BR later on.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Side buddy reads with our group like this without pressure are fun and fine by me if you want to do more when we are done with this one. As long as the book isn't super pricey like some of the BOMs then I should be fine. I'd be up for reading that one after this one.

Jenny | 8050 comments I just looked at the description for the God in Flight book, and I will probably skip that one. I am not much of a historical fiction fan of late. I used to read it a lot, and I got bored with the genre. Except books set in Ancient Greece. Those still work well for me. Hmmm. Something about Zeus and Apollo maybe.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Well there is some Greek stuff in there... ;D

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I was surprised how much I got into the Greek myth book that we did a BOM with for AMMP, The Song of Achilles, I ended up finding the writing beautiful and hard to put down when it started.

Jenny | 8050 comments If you liked that one, try Circe. Brilliant. Also, for beautiful writing with a dash of truly weird and wonderful, try The Just City.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I want to try Circe sometime for sure now that Ive read the author and people keep recommending it. I haven't heard of The Just City.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I'll break the ice on the official Day One of our Historical Mystery Romance

I expect fun comments to spring forth eventually - but get we were needed elsewhere since we got a new spin....and it's the morning when my mind is a bit slower anyway.

*sips coffee*

Haven't started this yet but plan to within next few hours. This will be a fun re-read I'm looking forward to. The only book time I've spent so far this morning is more of IT Audiobook.

Jenny | 8050 comments Aargh! I forgot to start this! Well, I have an hour before I have to leave for work...

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I finished The Devil's Thief on my way to work, and will be starting this during my lunch break. Excited!

Jenny | 8050 comments Three pages in and I already like it...

" He had grown up assuming that easy, uncomplicated companionship was the natural order of things. Now, it seemed a lost Eden."

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Jenny, have you read KJ Charles at all? Some of her stuff is very good, but her older stuff (like this) is my favorite.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Alysa wrote: "I finished The Devil's Thief on my way to work, and will be starting this during my lunch break. Excited!"

Me too, I've been looking forward to this since you suggested it. Starting in the new few minutes.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments In Chapter one, I love -

I have not, but I will look for other books based on the first three chapters.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Oh, found an F in the book ---- Fenella is the first of name of Mrs. Carruth, so we don't have to stick to only C's for Coffee.

Jenny | 8050 comments This is starting really nicely.
Curtis' first impression of Da Silva is wonderful.

(view spoiler)

Also, we can add an F (Fenella) to the letters.

Looks like we had much of the same idea. So glad you are enjoying it so far!

Alysa, have you started yet? I'm at the end of chapter one.

Jenny | 8050 comments Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* wrote: "Oh, found an F in the book ---- Fenella is the first of name of Mrs. Carruth, so we don't have to stick to only C's for Coffee."

Teehee. I was typing as you wrote that. Great minds and all...

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments In chapter two where

(view spoiler)

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I'm about to go to lunch in a few minutes, so will be out of Goodreads range for a little over an hour. Will keep reading and enjoying with an Arby's Gyro and soda.

Jenny | 8050 comments I probably won't have time until tonight to keep going, but comment away, I will catch up.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I like how their relationship is a slow and more realistic development over instant attraction or something else.

I will wait for further comments from you two since I've read it before and don't want to spoil anything. On Chapter Four right now before one of my favorite parts of the book.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I just read the first 2 chapters! I'm very impressed so far. The writing is very clever.

I've been trying to figure out what war Curtis would have been in, given this timeline and some of the details. The Second Boer War, probably, but was it stated somewhere, and I missed it?

I'm a little thrown by how casually everybody throws ehtnic slurs around regarding da Silva, but, I suppose it is period-appropriate.

And no, Curtis is definitely not the next James Bond. ;D

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Also, I keep picturing Downton Abbey, and Oxford University.

(Another shameless plug for The God in Flight -- also has a section which vividly portrays Oxford life, albeit a few decades earlier than Think of England.)

Jenny | 8050 comments I don't think they mentioned which war. Maybe we are just supposed to know.

I am picturing Oscar Wilde and Keanu Reeves. Kind of an odd couple, but I bet it ends up working.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments ROTLF

Alysa H. | 3840 comments For Curtis, I'm picturing James Wilby in Maurice.
For da Silva, I have a mental image but can't yet think of a real-life match.

Hm, not sure.

I know they are a bit severe on the slurs but I think that's just with the time period/crowd and works for the plot overall eventually.

I haven't seen it. I'm not picturing an actor for either, but I like Jenny's idea of a Keanu Reeves type because of the coloring. His name is really trending lately in all sorts of ways lol

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I’ve read through Chapter 6. Loving this book! That first book-up was a pretty, uh, interesting iteration of the “f#@k or die” trope.

Poor boys, having to smile and bear the social niceties around these awful blackmailers!

I’m off to watch the democratic primary debates but will probably read a few more chapters before I go to sleep tonight. My goal is to get halfway. :)

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Alysa wrote: "That first book-up was a pretty, uh, interesting iteration of the “f#@k or die” trope.."

I know, right? That scene stands out as a favorite. It's equal amusing and genuinely hot. *fans self*

I went to dinner with my parents, son and brother for my mothr's birthday, and now we're watching Seinfeld, so not sure if I will get more read tonight.

Jenny | 8050 comments Watched the debate, and then read a couple more chapters. Yup, the first encounter was funny and hot. How are they going to get out of this?

Two more chapters or so before bed...

Jenny | 8050 comments So, I finished it. I had to find out how it ended!
Now I am off to bed.
