Charles, KJ - Think of England - Informal Buddy Read starts 26 June 2019

Tomorrow night officially we start discussing? Do you want us to go by chapters at a time, or read at own pace, or....?

Yay!!
This trio for our buddy read will be fun, glad Alysa thought of it.
Hopefully you both don't hate the book now that I've so highly recommended it though. #pressure

Also, I think you both read faster than me, and I don’t want spoilers 😊

So, you can judge me too! : The God in Flight

I'll probably start in the morning (for me) tomorrow, and read half-ish. We can put stuff under spoiler tags if needed.

This is why I need to make good impression :p

There are some scenes that I'd love to discuss that stand out in the book, which is why I was hesitant to jump ahead of each other TOO quickly.
How about we can figure it in 1/4ths or something (not on the dot, but semi), just make sure to drop in the thread with a comment or two at least every few chapters? That way it should coordinate fine.

So, you can judge me too! : The God in Flight"
It actually sounds interesting, will buy now and check it out. =)

I wish everyone would buy that book! I wish I could just shove money at this author and get another book. Unfortunately, it's the only book she's ever published to date, and it's from 1995. It's new publisher announced they were putting out a short story collection of hers in 2017, but it did not happen. *sad*
It's probably the only book I would be down to re-read in the near future, if y'all are interested in another BR later on.

Sounds good.

I expect fun comments to spring forth eventually - but get we were needed elsewhere since we got a new spin....and it's the morning when my mind is a bit slower anyway.
*sips coffee*
Haven't started this yet but plan to within next few hours. This will be a fun re-read I'm looking forward to. The only book time I've spent so far this morning is more of IT Audiobook.

" He had grown up assuming that easy, uncomplicated companionship was the natural order of things. Now, it seemed a lost Eden."

Me too, I've been looking forward to this since you suggested it. Starting in the new few minutes.

I have not, but I will look for other books based on the first three chapters.

Curtis' first impression of Da Silva is wonderful.
(view spoiler)
Also, we can add an F (Fenella) to the letters.

Looks like we had much of the same idea. So glad you are enjoying it so far!
Alysa, have you started yet? I'm at the end of chapter one.

Teehee. I was typing as you wrote that. Great minds and all...

I will wait for further comments from you two since I've read it before and don't want to spoil anything. On Chapter Four right now before one of my favorite parts of the book.

I've been trying to figure out what war Curtis would have been in, given this timeline and some of the details. The Second Boer War, probably, but was it stated somewhere, and I missed it?
I'm a little thrown by how casually everybody throws ehtnic slurs around regarding da Silva, but, I suppose it is period-appropriate.
And no, Curtis is definitely not the next James Bond. ;D

(Another shameless plug for The God in Flight -- also has a section which vividly portrays Oxford life, albeit a few decades earlier than Think of England.)

I am picturing Oscar Wilde and Keanu Reeves. Kind of an odd couple, but I bet it ends up working.

For da Silva, I have a mental image but can't yet think of a real-life match.

Hm, not sure.
I know they are a bit severe on the slurs but I think that's just with the time period/crowd and works for the plot overall eventually.

I haven't seen it. I'm not picturing an actor for either, but I like Jenny's idea of a Keanu Reeves type because of the coloring. His name is really trending lately in all sorts of ways lol

Poor boys, having to smile and bear the social niceties around these awful blackmailers!
I’m off to watch the democratic primary debates but will probably read a few more chapters before I go to sleep tonight. My goal is to get halfway. :)

I know, right? That scene stands out as a favorite. It's equal amusing and genuinely hot. *fans self*
I went to dinner with my parents, son and brother for my mothr's birthday, and now we're watching Seinfeld, so not sure if I will get more read tonight.

Two more chapters or so before bed...

Lie back and think of England…
England, 1904. Two years ago, Captain Archie Curtis lost his friends, fingers, and future to a terrible military accident. Alone, purposeless and angry, Curtis is determined to discover if he and his comrades were the victims of fate, or of sabotage.
Curtis’s search takes him to an isolated, ultra-modern country house, where he meets and instantly clashes with fellow guest Daniel da Silva. Effete, decadent, foreign, and all-too-obviously queer, the sophisticated poet is everything the straightforward British officer fears and distrusts.
As events unfold, Curtis realizes that Daniel has his own secret intentions. And there’s something else they share—a mounting sexual tension that leaves Curtis reeling.
As the house party’s elegant facade cracks to reveal treachery, blackmail and murder, Curtis finds himself needing clever, dark-eyed Daniel as he has never needed a man before…
