SOLVED. YA Book with scene of boy stutterer trying to recite "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers", with encouragement from girl. Possibly set in the late 1800's or early 1900's. [s]

I read this in the early 90's. I thought it was a scene from one of the "The Days of Laura Ingalls Wilder" series by T.L. Tedrow, but i haven't been able to find it. I remember the boy was being teased by other boys, but a younger girl encouraged him. He recited the poem, taking deep gulping breaths in between and looking at the girl.

I know it's not much to go on. My other thought was that it was from a L.M. Montgomery book, but I haven't found it there either. The book had the same sort of time period feel about it though.
