How do you choose what to read?

I also have a goal this year of reading books that have been on my TBR for a long time or books that I have chosen for other tasks but never got around to reading.

I've also discovered audiobooks and enjoy them when playing computer games.

Carol, we all learn not to judge a book by its cover, but wow! they create some truly stunning cover art sometimes. Not to mention how the colors or font choices can help us identify the tone/genre of the book. Sometimes picking a book because of its cover is worthwhile.

Great point, Debra. Genre reads can be wonderful, but often it's the author more so than the genre that makes a book great.

Bea, may I ask what type of kindle you have? I have considered purchasing one. I like the paperwhite, but I believe it's only compatible with books ordered through amazon/kindle (I read most of my books with hoopla, cloudlibrary, or RBdigital so I can check them out for free). I've been considering one of the fire tablets instead.

I do understand about needing a clone. I love to read. So, I am susceptible to book lists...to GR recommendations...to book reviews...and any other way there is to learn about a book. I do not tend to read new books as they are harder to get from the library. And, some of the books I want to read are so old that they are harder to get. I also like used book sales and free books.
There are a lot of free book recommendations on the internet for Kindle. (Amanda, mine is an old Paperwhite.)
As I am a senior on a limited income, I do not tend to buy books but am a big user of my local libraries.
I haven't yet learned how to use the digital library resources.

Bea, please visit us at the reference desk if you'd ever like help with our digital resources (or anything else!). Unfortunately, hoopla and cloudlibrary will not be compatible with your Paperwhite. But that is great to know there are free Kindle resources - we will file that away in case patrons ever ask about them. Thanks for the tip!

Same for me! I have a case of "my eyes are bigger than my stomach" except with books.

So true! Also, I have learned so much more by venturing beyond my favorites.

Several years later...I now read a lot of Hoopla books on my computer. I find that it is a good source of old books for my mystery challenge (mysteries published 1900 to present). I have a list of favorites which is my list of books that will fit in my challenges.
But, overall...I love my libraries and actual books.
Do you stick with a particular length or format? Why?
