Aiken County Public Library | 77 comments New question! What factors are important to you when choosing a book to read or listen to?

Do you stick with a particular length or format? Why?

Amanda | 25 comments Lately I have only been reading e-books. I love the portability of it. I have a hard time remembering to carry print books with me, but I rarely forget my phone, so it's easy to pull out a book whenever. I've been sticking with shorter books lately, too. It's easy for me to give up on a book that's too long because, working full time and being in school, I end up getting distracted and lose interest.

Bea | 35 comments I belong to several reading groups here on GR. Each has a variety of challenges with which I select my books. I tend to prefer the genres of Mystery, Paranormal and Fantasy, but I will select books of other genres to meet the task needs.

I also have a goal this year of reading books that have been on my TBR for a long time or books that I have chosen for other tasks but never got around to reading.

D (sassypencil) | 6 comments I used to choose books in particular genres I liked. However, this year I have moved out of my comfort zone and will attempt to read any book I win via Goodreads. As a result, I have found that it is the BOOK and AUTHOR that determines my interest, not necessarily the genre.

Bea | 35 comments Amanda, I have a Kindle. I enjoy reading from it at night due to the backlighting of the book and when on trips... or if the book is an especially BIG Book like Game of Thrones and Les Miserables.

I've also discovered audiobooks and enjoy them when playing computer games.

Carol (valecynos) | 6 comments Honestly, it varies for me. Sometimes it will be because of a recommendation of a friend. Sometimes it's a simple matter of the cover catching my eye. Sometimes I choose books because they are by an author I have loved.

Carol, we all learn not to judge a book by its cover, but wow! they create some truly stunning cover art sometimes. Not to mention how the colors or font choices can help us identify the tone/genre of the book. Sometimes picking a book because of its cover is worthwhile.

Great point, Debra. Genre reads can be wonderful, but often it's the author more so than the genre that makes a book great.

Bea, may I ask what type of kindle you have? I have considered purchasing one. I like the paperwhite, but I believe it's only compatible with books ordered through amazon/kindle (I read most of my books with hoopla, cloudlibrary, or RBdigital so I can check them out for free). I've been considering one of the fire tablets instead.

Aiken County Public Library | 77 comments Also, a plug for our summer reading program! If you're interested in participating, you can enter to win a tote bag and free books. You get one entry toward the drawing for every book you read between May 20 and August 8. You can fill out an interest slip at the reference desk or do so online at http://abbelibsc.readsquared.com.

Here is the tote you can win (shout out to Hermione!) - https://outofprint.com/products/when-...

I do understand about needing a clone. I love to read. So, I am susceptible to book lists...to GR recommendations...to book reviews...and any other way there is to learn about a book. I do not tend to read new books as they are harder to get from the library. And, some of the books I want to read are so old that they are harder to get. I also like used book sales and free books.

There are a lot of free book recommendations on the internet for Kindle. (Amanda, mine is an old Paperwhite.)

As I am a senior on a limited income, I do not tend to buy books but am a big user of my local libraries.

I haven't yet learned how to use the digital library resources.

Bea, please visit us at the reference desk if you'd ever like help with our digital resources (or anything else!). Unfortunately, hoopla and cloudlibrary will not be compatible with your Paperwhite. But that is great to know there are free Kindle resources - we will file that away in case patrons ever ask about them. Thanks for the tip!

Same for me! I have a case of "my eyes are bigger than my stomach" except with books.

Bea | 35 comments I have joined several online groups who have challenges. I choose my books by the requirements of the challenge.

So true! Also, I have learned so much more by venturing beyond my favorites.

Several years later...I now read a lot of Hoopla books on my computer. I find that it is a good source of old books for my mystery challenge (mysteries published 1900 to present). I have a list of favorites which is my list of books that will fit in my challenges.

But, overall...I love my libraries and actual books.
