message 401: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleym99) I think there are many options for island. I would use it for 2 words but its up to you. I have one will finish in about 6 hours that can be used for island too.

message 402: by Karissa (new)

Karissa | 440 comments Maybe we should ask a question about genre next? We could pick one of the current popular genres for women to write like Thriller.

Or maybe we could ask if the author has wrote any non-fiction books?

message 403: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments We still need an author from an island, but seem to have quite a few options that will finish today. (I'll ask the mods about Melinda's) Here's the list I see from above of books that are being read and could be used for 2 books with the same word. If there are others, please let us know. In order to count, they have to finish after the author from an island, so I won't be able to monitor much today since I'm in the office with a shared cubicle on Wednesdays!

- The Red Queen: Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature (though it might be better not to stress Marie out right now!)
- The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time (if we count Staten Island as our island)
- George (if we don't count Staten Island as our island)
- We are the Perfect Girl
- The Book of Strange New Things
- Another Brooklyn

Sounds good, we'll save George for 2 words in case Hannah wants to read it (it's very quick, I almost accidentally finished it last night!).

We do have a lot of island options.

I like the genre idea. Which should we pick?

message 406: by Sara (new)

Sara (phantomswife) That would work great if someone is reading something with "book" "new" "strange" or "things" in the title, I'll have The Book of Strange New Things done by 3-4 o'clock.

message 407: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments Traci wrote: "As for questions, I'll ask about born before 1975. It might be nice to narrow down names some more too since we don't have a list to go off of. Would people be okay with that?

Traci, you're doing a great job with asking the questions! I think we often need to ask them one or two at a time, so we can use the answer to work out what to ask next.

I've just got home from work and I have no plans for the evening except reading :)

I have started George, and I'll get it finished tonight, unless I need to leave the last chapter until we have an island book, so that would be the two words prompt finished.

message 409: by Sara (new)

Sara (phantomswife) Yes, my kudos as well, Traci...you are doing a super job with all of this!

message 410: by Sara (new)

Sara (phantomswife) I think our next question needs to be about ethnicity. That would help to narrow the field considerably.

message 411: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 484 comments I have finished The Red Queen: Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature author born in UK - island - not time just now to add it to my books be back in half an hour or so

message 412: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments If you're thinking of a genre question, I'd probably ask if her books are aimed at adults first. I think that would narrow down which genre to guess at

message 413: by Marin (new)

Marin (marinbeth) | 187 comments I like the nonfiction idea for the next question.

I was also thinking of "has she been nominated for a Goodreads Choice award?" But maybe that's too specific.

message 414: by Marie (UK) (last edited Jun 12, 2019 11:05AM) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 484 comments Note to self
Grave Mercy = 135 pages today (remaining pages = 90)

Glory in Death = 60 pages today (remaining pages = 59 pages remaining)

The Red Queen: Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature 405 pages

will add pages to spreadsheet

message 415: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments So...ask 1) if she's white (It seems best to start here rather than a different specific ethnicity. Obviously, will not use the term Caucasian, ha!) and 2) if she's written any nonfiction? (fiction vs. non-fiction wording is a little tough since she might write both. If anyone has suggestions on wording, please do suggest!)

message 416: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments I finished my book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time if you still need it for an from an island.

message 417: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments I will start reading The Invisible Man by H. G. Wells for recommendation from Marie (my library did not have either of the Psychological thrillers).

I probably won’t have time to also work on the summer prompt.

message 418: by Marie (UK) (last edited Jun 12, 2019 11:37AM) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 484 comments have we reached any decision on books with same words in title?

I haveA Dangerous Act of Kindness which i could do with reading for another challenge

or

All Among The Barley

some of those words should be ok to find matches for

they are both historical fiction so don't think they will have plot twists

I haven't got anything to match The Book of Strange New Things that Sara suggested

I do have ones with "girl" in are you still reading that Tatra?

message 419: by Storm (new)

Storm My game is completed and my spreadsheet updated. I am deciding what book to read next now

message 420: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments Marie (UK) wrote: "have we reached any decision on books with same words in title?

I think Hannah and Traci are reading George.

message 421: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments Is anyone working on "A debut novel"?

message 422: by Storm (last edited Jun 12, 2019 12:04PM) (new)

Storm I'm picking up Song of Achilles in a bit from the library, that's a debut novel. I'm not sure how quickly I'll finish, so someone else can definitely be reading a debut novel too.

And if someone else does finish a debut book first, song of achilles works for a recommended book too

message 423: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments I think the suggested question is a good one "has she been nominated for a Goodreads Choice award"

I don't think the non-fiction/fiction one would be as helpfully.

message 424: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments I'm also thinking we could ask about year published.

Such as has she published a book in "2017, 2018, or 2019"

message 425: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments Jillian wrote: "Marie (UK) wrote: "have we reached any decision on books with same words in title?

I think Traci has very nearly finished George, and I will finish it in the next hour or so. Maybe even less if I don’t spend much time looking through GR. I’ll check back in when I have finished.

message 426: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments Jillian wrote: "I'm also thinking we could ask about year published.

I like both of these suggestions. I think I would ask about the GR awards first, because we could then make a list out of living, female American GR choice nominees, and then narrow it down based on year/genre.

message 427: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Mods - we have a question.

8. Games 10 - Has she been nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award?

message 428: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments I've finished George, and remembered I have a book set in summer on my kindle so will start that tonight.

message 429: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments 8. Games 10 - Has she been nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award? YES

message 430: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments I've just finished George and added it to the spreadsheet.

I've got an audiobook of Cartes Postales from Greece, which would work for a book with a romantic element. It's a book of short stories, and so doesn't fit any of the other prompts. I don't think I've got anything for the other prompts, but I'll have a look.

message 431: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments I'm happy to start a list of potential authors. I won't finish it before I need to go to sleep, but I'll get in at least 1-1.5 hours on it.

Do we have any more questions left? If we could ask one now, that might speed up the list making.

For example

Were they nominated for a GR choice award in 2013 or before / in 2014 or after?

Were they nominated for categories X? If we include half of the categories, with a mix of more and less likely categories, we would be able to eliminate more authors.

message 432: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments That sounds like a good idea to narrow the award years down.

message 433: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Mods - We have a question!

9. Bucket 12 - Was she nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award in 2014 or later?

I asked it, we have 2 more questions already earned and will have another once we have a debut novel (I haven't checked if we already do).

I can work on whittling the list this evening, thanks for starting that Hannah!

message 435: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments If anyone feels super strongly about a question I haven't asked, please let me know. Now that we'll have an author list I think it will help narrow down questions on genre, race, etc. I'll do a quick scan of messages in another hour or so and will do a more thorough review once I get home. Tonight is all reading challenge for me!

Traci, I have put in all the female authors with surnames starting A-F who were nominated in 2017 and 2018. I also added the award they were nominated for, the year, and if they won or not. I decided to leave duplicate authors, so that if we ask questions based on year or genre, we don't accidentally overlook someone. What I've not yet finished, is going through checking whether the authors were all born in the US ad after 1975. If you could help with any of this, or authors from other years, that would be great :)

Katie | 2360 comments 9. Bucket 12 - Was she nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award in 2014 or later? YES

message 438: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Hannah - I'll be home in about 2 hours and will start working on it then. Hoping we'll get an answer to the last question to narrow down years further.

message 439: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments I think if we have got 2, nearly 3 questions, we could use another one now to save time on the list making, either asking something that eliminates half of the categories, or half of the years. Or someone- I think it was Sarah- mentioned earlier about finding out if their books are aimed at adults/children.

message 440: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments Maybe something like is her main audience young adult or younger?

That would cover YA, middle school and children’s.

I was just logging on to say the same thing!

I'm going to focus on the goodreads awards to avoid the issue if she writes both adult and children's books and add graphic novels to the kid side to get a little more even distribution.

I should just leave work now.

message 442: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Mods - Hi! We have another question!

10. Games 11 - Was she nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award in any of the following categories in 2014 or later: graphic novel&comic, Middle Grade/Childrens, Picture Books, YA fiction, YA sci fi, YA fantasy?

message 443: by Kavitha (new)

Kavitha Sivakumar | 14 comments I finished A Column of Fire. Can read Diamond Fire if "two books with a matching word" is not pursued by anyone else

message 444: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments Traci, I'm glad you made that change! I just logged back on hoping you had not posted the question so we could make that change.

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Kavitha wrote: "I finished A Column of Fire. Can read Diamond Fire if "two books with a matching word" is not pursued by anyone else"

Kavitha - we finished the two books with a matching word prompt. I like your willingness to cover both parts though!

message 446: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments Kavitha wrote: "I finished A Column of Fire. Can read Diamond Fire if "two books with a matching word" is not pursued by anyone else"

That got filled but we still need "A debut novel" for bucket 13.

I think that should work. It has been awhile since I read it but I think it fits with thrillers having twists.
