Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Since it'll cut our list in half, I'm thinking start with A-F, then there'll be less searching to narrow down for years.

Hannah, since you've been engulfed in the list, do you have thoughts on what we should ask?

message 152: by Hannah (last edited Jun 08, 2019 04:03PM) (new)

Hannah | 384 comments Traci wrote: "Bucket # 4 is done! Should we ask if he published his first book in the 1900s? Born in the 1900s? It looks like Hannah is still busy summarizing info.

Trying to think of what question would make filtering easier. Since we have centuries right now, we'll have to look in detail at actual dates.

We could also always ask another subset like A-F (but might be better to wait on that until summarizing is complete)."

I think any dates might be a bit of an issue, because some of the authors fit into more than one century, and that isn't reflected on the spreadsheet.

Edited to add: I agree with cutting the list in half, and starting with A-F.

message 153: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments We could also ask if the author was born in a country that borders the Mediterranean Sea or a similar type question. Another idea is was the author born in a landlocked country.

message 154: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Let's cut it in half then go for more interesting questions!

message 155: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments I've finished Ordinary Thunderstorms, which could fit for a book related to nature (title).

I've also got about 30% of Robert Ludlum's (TM) The Bourne Initiative left to listen to, which could fit for book with a main character beginning with J, U, N or E, unless someone gets there first.

I've added my pages for the audiobooks I finished today, but I'll add the pages for Robert Ludlum's (TM) The Bourne Initiative when I finish it tomorrow.

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Mods - We have another question.

7. Bucket 4 - Does the author's surname start with a letter A through F?

message 157: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments 7. Bucket 4 - Does the author's surname start with a letter A through F? YES

message 158: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments I noticed Hannah also added the number of books by the author on the list so we might want to go that way for questions too.

message 159: by Karissa (new)

Karissa | 440 comments Traci wrote: "Oh wait, not quite reading.

Traci, I really liked Bowlaway though it might not be for everyone. It is a pretty quirky read with contradictory characters. I loved how playful the book was despite a lot of sad situations in the plot that are typical for multi-generation family sagas.

message 160: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments I've started a book for "book discovered during readathon" (Bowlaway) for Bucket 6.

Do we have people reading for nature (1 left) and main character JUNE for bucket 5?

How about anyone started or thinking about starting for published in the summer for bucket 6 (need 2)?

I thought I'd ask since we're now in more specific prompts. There are a lot of options, so I'm guessing yes, but thought I'd throw it out there.

Anyone have any books they've read that were amazing or unexpected or whatever else that they want to share with the group?

message 161: by Jillian (last edited Jun 08, 2019 05:37PM) (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments I have a book going for nature and should finish in around an hour. I have 60 pages left in a book originally published in August (I had 200 pages when the read a thon started).

message 162: by Ana (new)

Ana | 53 comments I have a couple of books that could work for published during the summer: Truly Madly Guilty was published in July 2016, Pilgrimage: The Book of the People, and ooh, i’m Almost ready to start The Time Paradox.

message 163: by Karissa (new)

Karissa | 440 comments I'm about 50 pages into The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society which can be used for a JUNE main character (Juliet) or a book published in the summer. It's a quick read so far so I may be able to finish tomorrow.

message 164: by Ana (new)

Ana | 53 comments I read 214 pages in The Lost Colony to finish it off, it’s just counting toward page count at the moment. I’m up to 544 pages for the day.

message 165: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments We now have 41 games, so can ask another question whenever we want. Anyone want to decide what we ask? We should have another couple tomorrow as well.

message 166: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments I finished the nature prompt with Hatchet,

message 167: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments I'm thinking maybe we should go back and ask the language question. Maybe something like Is the book/s published by the author from the 1001 list originally published in a language other than English?

Or we could continue narrowing it down surname A-C.

message 168: by Arielle (new)

Arielle | 12 comments I think Marie might be right with her guess of Dumas ! Maybe we can ask a clue that could narrow down if it’s him or not ?

message 169: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments Alexander Dumas has 3 books on the list so does the author have more than 1 book on the list would narrow it down.

If the answer is yes we are down to 47 possible authors and if no 73 authors.

message 170: by Kavitha (new)

Kavitha Sivakumar | 14 comments Pages completed today
Moovar -132
The light between oceans - 100
Total 232.
Updated the spreadsheet

message 171: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 245 comments I've finished American Street today. Unfortunately it won't count for a bucket category now, but I've updated my page count in the spreadsheet.

message 172: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Arielle and Jillian, I'll go with your question on number. We'll have 2 or 3 tomorrow, so if sleeping people (assuming not many of us are still up) have burning questions, there'll be time tomorrow.

message 173: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Mods - we have another question.

8. Games 4 - Does he have more than one book on the list of 1001 books to read before you die?

message 174: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Kristina - I've been thinking about reading American Street. How was it?

message 175: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments Here are all my updates for today and they have been added to the spreadsheet 6/8/19

The Wind in the Willows finished 6/8/19 (just counts toward page count)
24 pages

Early Riser
97 pages

Hatchet finished 6/8/19

message 176: by Storm (last edited Jun 08, 2019 09:00PM) (new)

Storm I just finished the JUNE character book!

main character is Jerry - 144 pages

I've updated my page count on the spreadsheet but I don't know how to update that I completed a book for the bucket

message 177: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments 8. Games 4 - Does he have more than one book on the list of 1001 books to read before you die? YES

I enjoyed it overall. It was a unique perspective and interesting story. I recommend it.

message 179: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments I second Kristina's recommendation of American Street. I read it a few years ago & really enjoyed it.

message 180: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments WooHoo! Bucket 5 is done! I'm thinking wait for the next question to see what the answer to the last one is. I better get reading...I might be the rate limiting step for bucket 6 if no one else has figured out a book discovered during the challenge!

message 181: by Storm (last edited Jun 08, 2019 09:09PM) (new)

Storm I just discovered American Street and I've seen several others I haven't heard of. So I am looking on Libby to see if any are available

~~Just found Annihilation on Libby and I hadn't heard of that one, so I'll start reading it

message 182: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments That is great that bucket 5 is done! I was going to be done for tonight but now I can try and finish my book tonight.

message 183: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments Traci, I'm not sure if you saw Katie posted the answer. It is a yes!

message 184: by Kavitha (new)

Kavitha Sivakumar | 14 comments Completed Moovar. Can be used for books published during summer.

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 484 comments Perhaps the question about written originally in foreign language or from a country bordering mediterranean

I have nothing for bucket 6 but could start LGBT for bucket 7 and also page 6 of TBR book - If I start them and leave about 50 pages until we get to those buckets they will be quick to fill

message 186: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Nationalities of those we have left (64 total):
Algerian/French 2
Argentian/Swiss 3
Austrian 3
Bosnian 1
Brazilian 1
Canadian 1
Canadian/American 1
Chilean 3
Cuban 2
Dutch/Austrian 1
English 19
French 9
German 4
Irish 1
Italian 3
Japanese 1
Nigerian 1
Russian 1
Russian/American 1
Scottish 1

Not many border the Mediterranean. Based on nationalities, it seems are his books written originally in language other than English or just Is he English could each be good questions. Marie, do you want to go with language? Also...I know this is how the world works, but it's still odd to me that I haven't gone to bed yet and it's your morning.

its very early morning here I am having trouble sleeping at the moment.
I think language might knock out half of those
BUT on the mediterranean coast might take out more - my Geography is about as bad as my sleeping - If it is a med country it would knock out a lot ETA maybe take us to under 20

message 188: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments I need to go to bed!

Based on today, there will be a lot of flurry before I'm up. We currently have one question we can ask (bucket 5).

If all 3 tasks for bucket 6 get completed, can someone post when that happens so everyone knows we can start collecting bucket 7?

Also, if you want to try to ask questions of the mods, start out with a "Mods, we want to ask a question". Otherwise, include what we should ask in a message and I'll post when I get up. The tab Hannah added to the spreadsheet is super useful and getting narrowed down!

message 189: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 484 comments Completed
The Rosie Effect
Pages 368

I have added it to spreadsheet woohoo me

message 190: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 484 comments I have also done todays game which is here
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

which i have also added to spreadsheet - getting brave

message 191: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthag503) | 513 comments I completed Scythe and read 310 pages on 6/8 and 94 pages on 6/9. It doesn't count for anything but pages read.

message 192: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments Morning all. I've just read one chapter today and my little nephew is coming round in a minute to play with his favourite aunty so I'll not get much more reading time unless he has a nice long nap! Fingers crossed.

I'm reading Fallout which could work for a random summer holiday (National video game day on 8th July) so I'll try to finish it in sync with that bucket

For the question, I like the one about english being the first language because it pretty much halves the options but I'm fine with whatever anyone wants to ask :)

message 193: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Since y'all are rocking the challenge so far, the mods have decided to add more buckets. There are now 11 buckets to be completed. Happy strategizing!

message 194: by Jillian (last edited Jun 09, 2019 05:57AM) (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments We have got some double authors on the list (I thought our last question should have narrowed it down to 47 possible authors).

16 Bolano Roberto 28 Bolano Roberto 34 Bolano Roberto

There are others but I don't want to delete anything and my eyes are still waking up. It seems to be authors whose surnames starting with B &C. Once we get that organized it should make deciding the next question easier.

If we are still thinking it might be Alexander Dumas then the Mediterranean question would be helpful. It might be good to have an idea of what authors we think it might be to help with the question.

message 195: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
New Rule:

- You will also receive a new author if you incorrectly guess the author 4 times.

message 196: by Arielle (new)

Arielle | 12 comments I just finished “The Game You Played “ by Anni Taylor. It can count for our second book published in the summer ( June 2016). I tried to slot it but I don’t think I did it correctly . Could you please add it for me?

message 197: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 484 comments have we attempted to guess the author? just wondering with the post above from Laura.

Sorry not been around today - Sunday so church this morning and then a short jaunt back now ill start to read bit expecting grandchildren to FaceTime soon

message 198: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Mods - we have another question:

9. Bucket 5 - Are any of his books that are on the list of 1001 books to read before you die originally written in a language other than English?

message 199: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments Marie- I think Laura posted that message to all teams.

message 200: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Since it's been brought up multiple times, I asked the original language question, hope that's fine for everyone!

Arielle - Added your book to published in summer.

Jillian - I went through and checked them against the list to fix the duplicates. In my job, we always say you need to save the original copy, and I didn't do that here...hopefully we haven't accidentally deleted the real author! The duplicates all did have the correct number of books, so hopefully not.
