Hannah | 384 comments I’ve just finished Home Fire which would work for bucket 4, a new-to-you author.

I’ve also completed the game for today, but I’m on my phone so I can’t update the spreadsheet.

For future questions, could we ask something to try to narrow down the authors surname? For example, Does the author’s surname begin with a letter A-M? Or could we try to find out how many books they have published? For example, Has the author published 5/8 + book ?

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Also.
Karissa - I like that question. I'm still not beyond basic demographics.

Jillian - Feel free to co-captain as much as you'd like!

Marie - So far I'm the only one with an option listed for page 6 of my TBR and it depends on the library, so it'd be great if you could keep yours in mind for that prompt! (though I'm sure we can find another if necessary)

I updated the spreadsheet with Home Fire and your game 2.

No worries, not a nuisance. Every day the mods post a game or set of questions. For every 10 of these completed, we can ask another question. They are in the Read-a-thon folder. The current two games are the kickoff and the book reader problem. I'll enter the names into the spreadsheet. Would it help if I (or someone else) posts the name of the new games when they show up?

The books and pages I see for you are
The Devil and Miss Prym - 201 pages (yesterday)
The Cement Garden - 144 pages (today)
Premonitions: Recognitions, Book II - 176 pages (today)
-These have all been added to the spreadsheet.
I'll add your message 80 book options into the planning tab.

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Thanks for your patience with my slurry of posts. I think everything is now up to date. I apologize if I've missed anything, but please let me know if anything looks wonky or if you need any more clarifications/have questions/etc.

message 109: by Karissa (new)

Karissa | 440 comments I just finished Bowlaway which can be used for either Bucket 4 prompt. This is the first I've read by Elizabeth McCracken and I will also be using this for my ATY challenge (as a book published in 2019).

Unfortunately, I think not. It looks like when you posted, we had filled the tasks for bucket 2, but not yet the pages for bucket 2 (Sarah's next post mentions it put us above 3000). Since for this challenge we can't start the next bucket until the previous has been filled, you finished in that magic spot where it can't be slotted into a task. It still helped for pages read though!!

I will try and help out this weekend. I won't be around much Mon-Thur. though.

I'm starting a new audio book that will work for the books inspired by a "quirky" summer holiday (June, July, or August)*
The Silver Linings Playbook
Jun 6 Thursday Drive-In Movie Day it is a book that has been made into a movie. This is one I can wait to finish for the bucket or just have it count towards the page count.

message 118: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Hey all -
We are one game away from getting another question.

Should we wait for the mods to answer the last set before we figure out the next one?

Questions that have been brought up:
Is his first language English?
Does his last name start with A-M?
Has he published more than 5 books? (or 8?)

The 20 questions part is honestly the part that is the most anxiety-provoking for me, so chatter is definitely most welcome!

message 119: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Mods - I don't know how often you are checking for questions, but I've posted a lot and wanted to make sure you saw these in the midst of all the other posts.

3. Bucket 2: Is the author from the US?
4. Games 2: Is one of the author's books on the list of 1001 books to read before you die?
5. Bucket 3: Is the author Caucasian?

message 120: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments I think we should wait for the answers before we ask more questions.

Depending on the answer to question 3. the language question would be more helpful if the answer is no.
I personally like the narrowing down of the authors last name. The amount of published books also sounds good to me. I think the hard part is picking out how many books to ask about.

Katie | 2360 comments Don't worry, we're going through all the posts to make sure questions don't get missed.

3. Bucket 2: Is the author from the US? NO

4. Games 2: Is one of the author's books on the list of 1001 books to read before you die? YES

5. Bucket 3: Is the author Caucasian? YES

5. Is the author Caucasian? This is difficult to answer. But I'm going to go with No.

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Ok, so we got two conflicting answers about Q5. 😩

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Haha whoops. I was actually on Google trying to find the correct answer and it appears to be conflicting. Interestingly, there's some discussion about how white people should counted in the 2020 census.

If the team would like to re-word the question, you can.

message 126: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments When I saw the question I thought it might have been a tricky one! I have no idea how to reword it though - hopefully we can come up with something!

message 127: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Hahaha! Thanks mods, you've given us some interesting information! If anyone wants to work on re-wording the question, for for it, but I think this gives us more info than a yes or no!

I'm excited about the answer for 1001 books, this will help narrow things down!

message 128: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Hmmm.. rereading the answers. Do you think is the author white would have been better than is the author Caucasian?

message 129: by Storm (new)

Storm Hey guys. I got added to this group yesterday right before I got off the computer.

So far I have read Matilda - 232 pages in my edition.

And I've done the kick off game

Traci will you add me to the spreadsheet or should I do that? I see we have one but I haven't opened it yet

message 130: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments Hi everyone. I've just got in from work and updated my reading for today. I'm currently reading Fallout which works for both the bucket 4 prompts. Everyone's doing so great we'll probably be past that point by the time I finish!

I agree with this. I think if we asked the question about the authors surname, this would narrow down the options even further. I would maybe only ask this one question next. We could then use the answer to these questions to slightly alter the other questions we want to ask, for example, does the author have more than X books on the 1001 list.

I think I’m going to switch to an audiobook now so I can start a list of male, dead, non-American authors on the 1001 books list who there is some debate as to if they are Caucasian😁

Storm-I added you, marked your two games, and added in your pages. Feel free to add to your game/page count or let me know if you'd like me to add to them. Note, we also have a planning tab where people have listed books they have available for the tasks if you'd like to add any books there.

message 134: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Mods - We have another question for you!

6. Games 3: Does the author's surname start with a letter A through M?

message 135: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments Hannah- I was hoping someone would have a list.

(Are we ready to ask our question with the author's surname A-M or N-Z?)

message 136: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments 6. Games 3: Does the author's surname start with a letter A through M? YES

message 137: by Marie (UK) (last edited Jun 08, 2019 01:23PM) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 484 comments perhaps we should ask about the time he wrote before 1900 or after

i am thinking victor hugo or alexandre dumas

message 138: by Marin (new)

Marin (marinbeth) | 187 comments I've just finished Penelopiada by Margaret Atwood for the ATY challenge.

I like the 1900 or after question. Or, was he published before 1900? If the answer is yes, I think that would narrow it down a lot.

message 139: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Maybe we should have date of death as before or after 1900, as there's a possibility that his publications/activity span the two centuries.

Looking at the list, the majority of authors seem to be published in the 1900s. So more authors should be eliminated if the question just asked if the author was published in the 1900s.

And for a late question we could always look at narrowing the surname down to a smaller range of letters.

I've added a third sheet to the team spreadsheet with all authors with surnames A-M. I've also included the dates they were published and their nationality, so these could be easily used as questions to eliminate some authors. I just now need to go back through the list and remove all the female authors, and those authors I know who are still alive. I'll post again to let you know when that has been finished.

message 141: by Jillian (last edited Jun 08, 2019 01:54PM) (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments I think either Marie, Marin or Jody's 1900 question would be good for the next question. If we go for the publishing question, we might want to ask narrow it down to 1st published before the 1900s since Jody makes a good point he could have published in both centuries.

message 142: by Ana (new)

Ana | 53 comments I finished A Justified Murder for 330 pages, this is going to be my pick for ATY #51. A book published in 2019.

message 143: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments I added Tatra and Marin's books to the book list as well as Tatra's pages.

For bucket 4 we still need 2 more new to you authors OR 1 new to you author and one ATY book. We also need about a thousand more pages.

Hannah - awesome job compiling this list! I was going to start the same but it seemed like too much.

If most of the writers published in the 1900's, another option would be something like first published before 1950.

Okay, back to reading for me!

message 144: by Joan (last edited Jun 08, 2019 02:39PM) (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments Ok I finished The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. It can count either for an ATY book or a new to me author.

I marked it on the worksheet

message 145: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Oh wait, not quite reading.

Amy and Karissa - How is Bowlaway? I just saw it at the library and picked it up since we still have a 0 for "discovered during readathon". I was thinking this might be a hard category, but I hadn't heard of Bowlaway.

message 146: by Sara (last edited Jun 08, 2019 02:51PM) (new)

Sara (phantomswife) I have finished The Princess Bride - new to me author. 452 pages

I entered on spreadsheet (hope that was right).

message 147: by Jillian (last edited Jun 08, 2019 03:22PM) (new)

Jillian | 2880 comments I just add my morning pages to the spreadsheet and now the Bucket #5 has been unlocked.

I'm going to switch my reading now to Hatchet (Brian's Saga, #1) by Gary Paulsen Hatchet which should work for nature and be a fast read.

message 148: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I just completed today's game and marked it.

message 149: by Traci (last edited Jun 08, 2019 03:38PM) (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1268 comments Bucket # 4 is done! Should we ask if he published his first book in the 1900s? Born in the 1900s? It looks like Hannah is still busy summarizing info.

Trying to think of what question would make filtering easier. Since we have centuries right now, we'll have to look in detail at actual dates.

We could also always ask another subset like A-F (but might be better to wait on that until summarizing is complete).

message 150: by Jillian (new)
