Sci-fi book - A planet where it never gets dark. Someone invents a theme park ride which is pitch black and it terrifies the inhabitants

I don't usually read sci-fi books this is possibly my only foray and I am not sure I haven't imagined this story line! I read the beginning of this book (if it exists) many years ago and found it intriguing and would like to finish it.
