This is an older book. My dad read it to me in 1985 and it was old then. The book took place underwater and the characters lived in some sort of underwater pod/research facility. I remember lots of action and a scary encounter in a cave with an eel. I have a faint memory that maybe one of the characters was named Skink, but that could be an unrelated memory. The cover was non-descript and blue. Possibly without a true cover at all. I want to read this book with my daughter and would love help figuring it out!

Could it be Crisis on Conshelf Ten by Monica Hughes? I can't remember any of the characters' names or if there was an eel in a cave, but most of the book is set in an underwater research facility and there's a fair bit of action and intrigue.

I think the Skink reference and the eel (a giant eel) points to Underwater Adventure by Willard Price.

Skink is a Grade-A scumbag and would certainly stick in your memory.
