Alysa H. | 3840 comments Oh god no, Kushiel’s Dart is waaaaaay too long a time commitment. Someone on my team is already reading it (started this morning) too.

I would nominate something by ZA Maxfield (tons of stuff via library) or LA Witt ( Where There's Smoke , currently free on Amazon for example)

Ordinarily I'd be totally on board for that one, but I re-read it only just about 6 months ago... Although by July it would definitely be over six months... Is the 6 month rule in place for WoB as well?

I'm with you, Alysa! Too long, plus there have been plenty of other fantasy BOM's in the regular group.

I have to agree with Alysa, I'd rather keep it light and fun for a backroom BOM. To me Kushiel's Dart seems a bit high fantasy/historical and slower reading. I haven't read it but it looks intimidating

I just had a look through freebies I still have lying around:

Save the Date is a bit on the short side though.
Come Away with Me (NA tag, too)
All Fired Up

Oh and I just stumbled back across Caged Wolf *shudder* if you want a baaaaaad one, I can suggest this haha. I will not touch it ever again and certainly am not nominating it, but just thought I'd throw it out there for those of you who like to read terrible books from time to time for entertainment hehe.

Save the Date has potential, for those of us who prefer MM. And it is free. You’re right that it’s short though.
Did you look at Where There's Smoke? Also MM and free, but about 100 pages longer...

I did look at that one as well. It would definitely be longer, but unfortunately isn't free for me. Might be a country thing?

A team mate spontaneously read His Banana (Objects of Attraction, #1) by Penelope Bloom and said it had a lot of lols. Title and synopsis sound like fun! And it's currently free on kindle. So I figured I'd share here, since I know some of you like to read these kinds of books from time to time :-)

By popular demand nominations have opened for a July Backroom BOM!

Make your nominations on the thread in the backroom here: noms close on 23rd and the poll will run 24 - 30 June.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Once the July Backroom BOM is selected, what will the reading start date be?
ETA: sorry, got carried away before I had a chance to check the Backroom Group. I mean, is it always the 17th of the month, or is there possibly some wiggle room? It would be great if we could start a few days earlier, is all. 😁

Week 3 rolls are up, and it looks like we've got a couple of teams with a repeated word.... Should we try and corral the Chipmunks for a ReSpin?

The Chipmunks were so terrified by the number of teams reading horror & suspense that they accidentally hit the genre respin button, and ALL teams have a word linked to those two genres.
Teams with new genres should note that their word has NOT changed.

We'll be running a mini-challenge during Fright Week (5 - 12 July)!

Teams are on a scavenger hunt to round up Fright Week words, finding them in the title, text or cover (if it fits) of their books.
Teams can find up to 25 of the words, across the standard and tricky words.
All words must match, the only variations allowed are singular/plural, verb tenses (eg defenetrated) or different hyphenation. Tricky words must be found together as the phrase
Each word can only be found once
Only one word can be found per book read (though of course multiple people could read the book to find different words)

STANDARD WORDS - 5 points each
blood chills Dracula Jason Winchester
gravestone bone Frankenstein defenestrate Carrie
scream anxiety Jack the Ripper supernatural poison
rollercoaster cliff-hanger Rebecca Sam serial killer
horror Caleb Exorcist Dean Salem
suspense Annabelle Damian Satan cat
fright Chucky devil witch hide
creepy Pennywise Pyscho knife sofa
terror spider Jaws gore death
stalker clown Scarecrow behead maim
invoke cabin woods night monster
shadows dark nightmare conjure flay

TRICKY ONES - 10 points each
Freddie Krueger
Black Dahlia
Black Widow
Andrea Yates
Charles Manson
White Woman
Michael Myers
OJ Simpson
Marie Antoinnette
Lucrezia Borgia
Bloody Mary

sheets will be added in the next day or so

ReSpins will not be possible this week - the Chipmunks are hiding under the sofa

message 329: by Deanna (new)

Deanna | 3529 comments Could I get a Goodreads librarian to fix a page count for me please?

The book is: Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble (Jolie Wilkins, #1) by H.P. Mallory

It's currently listed as 292 pages.

Amazon lists the Kindle version at 468 pages here, which matches the count for the paperback version published this year. (The audio is 13 hours if you need further confirmation that the original page count is incorrect.)

Thanks in advance for the help!

Ora (oeamis) How much longer for wheel? Between being burnt out after the captain's challenge over at Perks and then vacation I didn't want to commit to anything when I could not read as much as I usually do for intense challenges. I guess what I am curious about if there is a chance I could be a back up player.

We're at the halfway point, Ora. Fill in the form and we'll see if you can fit you in. We might ask you to limit the number of books you submit for Wheel though, so you don't completely skew team dynamics :)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Jenny wrote: "I think you can read it now, but if you want the BOM points, you have to participate in the discussion once it happens."

I thought for BOMs, you have to be actively reading at least part of it during the period when DQs are posted, or within 1 month after...? So you cannot read an August BOM now and get the points in August...
(I could be confusing this for a BOM rule that came up in a different context though.)

Week 6 words have been revealed!

Teams need to decide if they want to keep their word or want to do a Chipmunk ReSpin. Post in the ReSpin thread of the Captain's Group if you want a ReSpin. Deadline for ReSpin is Thursday, 5pm UK time.

Deadline for the end of Week 5, when all books must be on your official team sheet is Friday 10pm UK time. Click the clock for the countdown.
Week 6 starts at that point.

Remember, no books finished in Week 5 can be used for Week 6!
