Mark (markmtz) | 2658 comments Hat tip to John Scalzi for a link to A People Map of the US. Scalzi's post is at https://whatever.scalzi.com/2019/05/3...

A People Map of the US is at https://pudding.cool/2019/05/people-map/

I live in George R.R. Martin, also known as Santa Fe, NM

Too bad it's only the US and not just authors. You might live in a serial killer or some less lethal celebrity.

terpkristin | 4264 comments Edward Norton went to my high school (before I got there), but apparently Randy Pausch (The Last Lecture) grew up in my hometown and is the most Wikipedia'd person. Well, the town I also grew up in, many years later.

Apparently the closest Wikipedia'd person to where I live now is George Marshall. Surprised, given the history of tech where I live...

message 3: by terpkristin (new)

terpkristin | 4264 comments I lied. I didn't look closely enough. My town is now infamous for Gina Haspel, because she lives here. Not entirely surprising but disappointing.

message 4: by Malaraa (new)

Malaraa | 92 comments I currently live in a football player, sadly. No author for me. My original home town is an Olympic athlete.

message 5: by John (Taloni) (new)

John (Taloni) Taloni (johntaloni) | 4490 comments John F. Kennedy for me.

*clears throat* "Oi prahpose that we go to tha moon in this decayde, not becaase it is easy, but becaase it is hahd."

message 6: by terpkristin (new)

terpkristin | 4264 comments He shows up in multiple places. I wonder how many others do.

Of course it doesn't have Australia, but I don't need a map to know who the most famous person from my small town is.

Someone very few people here have ever heard of ;-)
Ian Stewart

John (Taloni) Taloni (johntaloni) | 4490 comments It's Young Einstein of course. *ducks, runs for cover*

message 9: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (raitalle) | 52 comments My hometown is Steven Yuen (Glen in The Walking Dead), which is not surprising because I already knew he went to my high school (he was in my best friend's older sister's class), and I guess that's at least genre related.

My current home is Ludacris, which is a little whatever, but I just learned from this that a nearby town that's not...the nicest place...is the birthplace of Dick Van Dyke, so that's kind of bananas.

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2088 comments I live near Bradford, so I'll claim Scalzi, I guess. Of course, my Bradford is in England, but it's good enough for me. Shame the map doesn't have a search option, as I am sure there is a Manchester too, but I have no clue where it is!

Edit: Oh, wait, there it is! Adam Sandler, huh? I'll stick with Scalzi. ;)

message 12: by Robyn (new)

Robyn | 31 comments I live in Neal Stephenson! Ames, IA.

message 13: by Tamahome (last edited Jun 01, 2019 07:35AM) (new)

Tamahome | 6598 comments I live in John Malkovich.

I'm not around the ?Boston? accent much and it was like a lightbulb turning on when I'd figured out your spelling. Thanks for the smile you gave me today, John!

message 15: by Mer (new)

Mer | 192 comments To Mark's comment, one of my favorite places in the US has a man currently being brought to trial for 2 of 3 murders. Poor Galveston TX should get a do-over.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments Interestingly, I live in an actress who has played roles in science fictionish movies - The Space Between Us and Tomorrowland.

(Is this looking at what people are looking up RIGHT NOW because the names are a bit random. Two towns in NC have Nina Simone?)

Hashtag geezer reference.

Here’s the best Boston accent thing evah: https://youtu.be/rLwbzGyC6t4

message 19: by Trike (new)

Trike | 9516 comments I live in Horace Greeley. (“Go west, young man.”) Which is expected, since his childhood home is less than a mile from my house.

Right now I’m across from the San Diego convention center (home of Comic Con) and the person is Kris Jenner. Ick.

Mark (markmtz) | 2658 comments Jenny (Reading Envy) wrote: "Is this looking at what people are looking up RIGHT NOW because the names are a bit random"

I think the data represents a recent timeslice of wikipedia searching, so something happening in recent news can probably skew the results.

message 21: by Phil (new)

Phil | 1211 comments I'm in Vancouver, Canada but across the line in Washington the closest author is Frank Herbert. Most of the rest are mostly athletes that I've never heard of and a few actors like Hillary Swank and Chris Pratt.

message 22: by Bill (new)

Bill | 105 comments I got Matt Dillon which isn’t surprising since his parents live around the corner from me. Pretty sure he hasn’t lived here for a few decades though.

message 23: by Serendi (new)

Serendi | 848 comments Sylvester Stallone, who went to the same elementary school as me (different years).

message 24: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments Jeff Goldblum went to my high school. Graduated 2 years before my mom. So I live in Jeff.

message 25: by Sheila Jean (new)

Sheila Jean | 326 comments Apparently I live in Eliza Dushku. So not an author, but an actor known for fantasy and sci-fi roles.

message 26: by Erik (new)

Erik Melin | 114 comments Violent J, founding member of ICP. I already knew that but it's upsetting still to see it. I live near 8 mile and close to Eminem's recording studio but he counts for Detroit. Kristen Bell went to my high school 7 years before me but lived in the bordering city. Not that there is much difference when both of the cities are only a few square miles.

message 27: by Mike (new)

Mike (mindolin) | 25 comments I live in Taylor Swift, but the nearest author is John Updike.

message 28: by Elizabeth (new)

My small Australian town is John Howard. The actor.

Mark (markmtz) | 2658 comments There is a UK version now.

Yay! Though I notice there is no entry for Leeds. That is bizarre! They make a big deal of Ed Sheeran in little old Halifax. I am guessing the sizing is based on how frequently the person is searched.

My current town isn't listed, and there is an historical figure I've never heard of for the village I grew up in. I went to school in Phil Lester, a YouTuber I rather enjoy, and nearby is Sir Ian McKellen, who has two entries, I notice, the greedy begger.

message 31: by Iain (new)

Iain Bertram (iain_bertram) | 1595 comments I am living in Jon Richardson (comedian).

Interestingly I have Thora Hird living next door rather than Eric Morecambe! That must have been a tussle (Eric broke the tools by taking his name from his birth place)...

message 32: by Tina (new)

Tina (javabird) | 738 comments I was born in Bill Gates, grew up in Steve Jobs, and now I work in Bill Gates.

message 33: by John (Taloni) (new)

John (Taloni) Taloni (johntaloni) | 4490 comments Where I live now is best known for Philip K. Dick, but apparently the map has Gwen Stefani. Hrumpf. Oh well, at least the overall metro region (Los Angeles) has Elon Musk.

message 34: by Mark (last edited Jun 10, 2019 02:02PM) (new)

Mark (markmtz) | 2658 comments As mentioned in the latest podcast, living la vida Tom Merritt...

message 35: by Sean (new)

Sean | 358 comments I live in Dakota Fanning, which I was actually aware of.

message 36: by Kev (new)

Kev (sporadicreviews) | 663 comments Dylan Minette?! Who the Eff is that?! I'da thought they'd go with Ron Glass.
(Evansville, Indiana)

message 37: by Jesse (last edited Jun 14, 2019 05:07PM) (new)

Jesse | 7 comments So I was born in Tiffany (the singer), grew up in Thomas Kinkade and now live in Bill Gates and work in Satya Nadella. Looks like the nearest author is Frank Herbert. The spice must flow...

message 38: by Gina (new)

Gina (ravenlynne) | 3 comments I currently live in Lynyrd Skynrd near Ashley Greene but I was born in Ellen Degeneres. What's funny is that Al Copeland is listed as Arabi, LA, but I grew up living 8 blocks from his house that he lived in forever.
