YA fantasy yearly contest for someone to become the male characters partner and climb castes. Girls get killed off by the guy if he dislikes something they do

This book was about a girl who was walking home late one night bumped into a guy she didnt know.. following on there is an anual competition for girls to become the partner of the (maybe) king.. her friend tells her she is going to take part because her husband had died and left her with his dwbt to pay and they were part of the poorer caste. Winning the competition would guarantee financial safety, although he kills many of the girls. She then takes part and when she arrives for the firat day of the competition its like a ball and the man will dance with each competitor once and then he dances with his favourite twice. He also kills a girl at this ball and further on in the book he kills another girl because she slurps her soup.. any help would be aopreciated!
