This is a book a friend of mine gave me around 2002. In it the main character creates a far more sensitive EEG machine housed in a simple cap.

He places his EEG on terminal patients and notes that when they die a small electromagnetic field leaves the body heading upwards. He deduces that this is the body's spirit and starts placing it on pregnant women to see when the spirit enters the body.
