I believe this book was published in the early 80's. It is about a boy who can mentally leave his body and join an animal. He experience everything they are going through and travels with them. He helps a veterinarian diagnose horses. Written for 10+ age group.

I don't remember it much. I know it was cream and I think there was a horse on it.

It was set in a current time. I know the more he inhabited other animals, the harder it was to leave. No villains, and a veterinarian as a friend.
