Read this sometime between 2014-2016 in secondary school so I believe it might've been YA or a slightly younger age range.
There were two friends-both girls- who find something in the forest or a graveyard and the main character is compelled and keeps visiting this place. Now I think there was something underground as from what I remember of the book cover, it featured something akin to roots? or just the ground in general?
One major think I do remember about the book was that the main character had a boyfriend and that her best friend liked her so she became jealous at some point and that affected the end of the book.

At the end the main character's best friend died in a car crash on her way to save the main character but it was due to some supernatural force of darkness or something which was linked to whatever it was that was underground.

Sorry for the lack of detail here, I can't for the life of me remember much of what happened except that it was very disturbing at the end.
