4/5 The Portrait of a Lady - listened to the audiobook and then watched the movie with Nicole Kidman and John Malkovich. Book was better, movie was too shallow and strangely sexual (which the book was not)

Updated Message #5I read Shroud For a Nightingale, written in 1971, and then watched the 1984 production starring Roy Marsden as Dalgliesh.
It's always interesting to see how a writer adapts the book into a screenplay. Some things are slightly changed and characters are left out in order for the play on the screen to move along and not be confusing to the viewers. The did a very good job of adapting this one. I wish they could have set the action in the 1971 setting, rather than in 1984, but I know budgets don't always allow for such things.
I enjoyed the book more than the mini-series because I enjoy the in depth vision of the characters that just isn't possible on the screen, but I have no problem watching the screen versions of James' books.
2/4
update msg 33: 4,5/5 - I watched a movie called The Adjustment Bureau, which had quite an interesting premise (the "Fate" ruling human lives and the possibility/impossibility to break it), so I looked up whether it was based on a book. It wasn't, but it was based by a short story called The Adjustment Team by Philip K. Dick. They only took the idea from the story and set it to the present time and added the chase for the perfect love to it. Still an interesting watch/read.
Update msg 33: done5/5: Whisky Galore - read the book and watched the movie, both are ok, if you like whisky and/or Scotland, even better.
Just completed another book - Five Feet Apart by Rachel Lippincott. I've never read a book that started as a screenplay and was novelized before the movie released. Really interesting concept, and I appreciate the awareness it brings to cystic fibrosis. I found the relationships to be a bit two-dimensional, even for YA, but I loved the ending. Worth reading! 4 stars2/5
Update to message #6--3 of 6 done! I inadvertently read two books that were not on my original listing that had movie adaptations, so I watched those two and added them to my original listing, making 6 total!
Just watched the adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Given that Stephen Chbosky wrote the screenplay, I had a fairly good idea this would be a good adaptation. I wasn't wrong - good movie!2.5/5
Just completed my 4th book - Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou. This is an utterly fascinating and terrifying work of investigative journalism! To think that this woman put patients' lives at risk speaks to the very worst about corporate greed. Well-written and supported. My only criticism was it was a bit dry in the first quarter of the book. Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars3/5
Just watched the HBO documentary The Inventor, based on the John Carreyrou's reporting from which Bad Blood originates. Elizabeth Holmes is seriously messed up. Thank goodness for good reporters!3.5/5
Just watched Five Feet Apart, the movie. Pretty good adaptation, considering the book and screenplay were written very closely together. Definitely worth watching but read the book first.4/5
I've read 3 more books to make my total 6/16, I've just got some tv and movie watching to do today now.
Just completed my 5th book - The Aftermath by Rhidian Brook. This book is beautifully written with complex characters. Not a huge fan of the rather literary ending. However, I really appreciated that the author delved into the aftermath of WWII and presented both sides of rebuilding Germany. Worth reading! 4 stars4.5/5
Just watched the adaptation of The Aftermath. Even though the author was involved in adapting the screenplay, there were some essential pieces of the story that were left out. The movie itself was well done, but it didn't fully reflect the book.5/5 - challenge completed!!!

8/8 Complete!Finished Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon and watched an episode of Outlander (because I just found out it's on Netflix and I don't have to pay for Starz).
Update to message #6. Completed 4 of 6. Had originally only listed 3, so completed one more than I thought I would. That still leaves The Silver Linings Playbook, however. Hopefully I'll still read it before years' end! :)
Updated to Message 82! Congrats to everyone for finishing and participating in this challenge! It really is a challenge making time for both books and shows/movies.
