I saw that this functionality was added a while ago to the Groups pages and saw something similar being done in a different group.

Fel and I discussed this and thought it would be something fun for us to do as a group, sooooo... without further ado:

I declare the 2019 Group Reading Challenge Open.... Retroactively.

Yeah! I just went back through my 2019 books and added them to the right folder.

Yah, going to do exactly that now, this should be interesting.

message 5: by Chuck (new)

Chuck McIntyre (jithrae) | 37 comments Just to solicit opinions, does gamelit (and therefore this challenge) include things like The Magitech Chronicles Quadrilogy: Books 1 - 4 of the Magitech Chronicles in which there are leveling aspects but the characters are not in a game?

message 6: by GaiusPrimus, Kindle Wizard (new)

GaiusPrimus | 212 comments Mod
While LitRPG normally takes place within a game with "crunchy" numbers, Gamelit is a higher level umbrella term that can encompass non-game settings that have game like structures.

An example of this is Tao Wong's apocalypse series, or any of the other post-apocalyptic series as well as Dan Sugralinov's Level Up series.

Mark | 9 comments Too bad it doesn’t pick up books you read forthe 2nd or 3rd time (part one reread when part two is released)

message 8: by Travis (new)

Travis (softcon) | 65 comments You're going to get all kinds of opinions about this, but according to the guys that basically invented the genre, LitRPG is any book where progress is measured in level improvements, skill increases, and the like.  I'm pretty sure there's an implied it should take place inside a game (thus the RPG aspect), but based on other discussions I've had with folks here and elsewhere, some people feel as long as it has increases, it qualifies.  I don't agree, since I believe the original intent was specifically to apply to gaming environments, and honestly, if I'd invented the genre, I'd be offended at some of the stuff folks try to pass off as LitRPG these days, but that's just me.
Things that don't qualify as LitRPG certainly can qualify as gamelit, and that would have a much larger range of acceptable categories, but some people refuse to believe there's any distinction between the two, and that just irritates me into incoherent fits of rage at their complete lack of brain power when applied to the definition of LitRPG as stated by it's inventor, but again, that's just me, and everyone is entitled to their own opinions, regardless whether I agree or not.

Good thing then that this is the Gamelit/LitRPG challenge then ;)

Anyways, I'm in agreement with you in so far as Gamelit and LitRPG are two different things, but the definition of Gamelit encompasses what LitRPG is whilst the opposite is not true.

Naomi | 8 comments Mark wrote: "Too bad it doesn’t pick up books you read forthe 2nd or 3rd time (part one reread when part two is released)"

You can add additional read dates by editing your review if you read a book multiple times. It seems like it should count then.

message 11: by GaiusPrimus, Kindle Wizard (new)

GaiusPrimus | 212 comments Mod
Yeah, the way it's setup should indeed pick up any book read in 2019, as long as it is in the folder you specify.

message 12: by GaiusPrimus, Kindle Wizard (new)

GaiusPrimus | 212 comments Mod
This is from the Reading challenge main page (if you click on your "read X of at books")

MISSING BOOKS?
You can easily add books to this list by setting the Date Read for each book to any time in 2019.
Are you re-reading? That counts too!

message 13: by Quantum (new)

Quantum (quantumkatana) | 27 comments Graphic novels/manga? (like So I'm a Spider, So What?, Vol. 1) 1 vol. won't hit the word count min.

message 14: by D (new)

D | 11 comments Does The Last Wish (The Witcher, #1) by Andrzej Sapkowski counts???

Like I said, we aren't going to be auditing, but we're looking for Novella sized minimum. We can always add a separate challenge for graphic novels if there's interest.

I would say no, but I haven't read the series so I don't know if the world is gamefied.

Definitely worth reading! But not Gamelit :( The games are based on the books (not sure how closely b/c I'm still on the first game)

Wuxia is tricky. Again, if you consider it, the go nuts.

message 21: by Dumitru (new)

Dumitru Toma | 12 comments I think it fits in the GameLit universe somewhere, I mean it's about advancing something like level up or those dungeon themed so even though it does not have numbers or table sheets it still has a sense of gaining levels. But I am no GameLit or LitRpg expert.

message 22: by Anastacia (new)

Anastacia I don't know how to add folders to my read. I'm really lazy XD

My books>Read

Under the "read" tag, there's an "edit" link under it. Click on that and type a shelf name that you would like to use there. Then you just need to add the other books to that same shelf after retroactively.

Going forward, you can do it when you finish reading the book.

John Sullivan | 1 comments Ok, sounds like a fun thing. How do I get books I’ve read in my challenge across to the LitRPG challenge (I’ve read about 80 so far this year).

message 25: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Burgos | 5 comments I am not able to contribute to the group reads. I follow the like and it just takes me to my reading list. Is that what’s supposed to happen?

Here's the link again. Another way to get to it is from the main page of the group. It's the first thing right under the banner and the schpeal about the group. If you click on the title, it will take you to the place where you can set your shelf and number of books.

Just follow the link and at the bottom of the challenge you'll see a place to pledge the number of books and a place to type the shelf that the challenge should be looking at. Then it will automagically find all the books in that folder that have a reading date in 2019.

For example, I have a shelf called LitRPG where all the Gamelit/LitRPG/dungeon books I read get shelved in. That is the shelf I selected and the challenge pulled all 66 books out of the 75 I've read so far this year that were Gamelit/LitRPG/dungeon by its lonesome.

Naomi | 8 comments GaiusPrimus wrote: "Wuxia is tricky. Again, if you consider it, the go nuts."

While Forge of Destiny is definitely wuxia, it was written as a quest so it must be litrpg, right?

message 29: by Roger (new)

Roger | 18 comments There's definitely a few books on some people's shelves that are not litRPG...to make it only count the ones tht are litRPG you need to create a new shelf and link that shelf to the challenge. You shouldn't be using the default "Read" shelf, unless you don't plan on reading anything other than litRPG this year.

It does. It's Gamelit/LitRPG challenge.

To clarify, some of the books were straight Fantasy or Sci-fi.

message 39: by H (new)

H Rez | 13 comments Just noticed that when you change a book status to read via your book list it doesn't update the date read, so if you're used to doing it that way like me, you might want to check you challenge list for books with no read date and update that so they count.

GaiusPrimus | 212 comments Mod
Nice callout.

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

Do the DragonLance books qualify as GameLit? Seems to me they should since it was an offshoot of D&D back in the day and was even published by TSR.

But wanted to check to see if anyone disagrees before I start logging hours/pages on those.

message 42: by GaiusPrimus, Kindle Wizard (new)

GaiusPrimus | 212 comments Mod
I would say not. I don't recall any of them having a levelling or gamefied mechanics.

Okay. No problem.

message 44: by Billy (new)

Billy Munich | 12 comments Has anyone else read The Gameshouse? If so, is it Gamelit?

It isn't what I typically think of as Gamelit, but I could see it fitting in. Just looking for a second opinion.

(BTW, I'm only about 20% through, but it's good so far)

message 45: by Cory (new)

Cory | 2 comments I’m sorry, I admit I didn’t check to see if someone already asked this, but how do you sign up for this challenge when I click the link it just links me to my personal challenge.

You have to use the desktop version of the website. Mobile or App does what you are seeing.

I'm curious to hear your opinion on books that start in a game world that becomes real then. Like Chaos Seeds series in which the video game was designed as a way to bring humans to the alternate world that functions exactly like the game. It has all the levels, stats... that the game did, but is no longer a game technically.
Would those books still be considered LitRPG's then?

message 50: by Chuck (new)

Chuck McIntyre (jithrae) | 37 comments If you add things to your shelf, sometimes your challenge doesn't update. To get it to count books, you have to go back in, re-add the shelf using to track and update your goal. I just jumped ahead 10 books that way since it hadn't updated in a while.
