(Last one is not strictly horror, more YA fantasy/horror, but hey, it scared me and her writing is gorgeous.)

I need to read a lot more from women in this genre so I'm looking forward to other answers!

WYLDING HALL by Elizabeth Hand was one of my FAVORITES!! I can't read it often enough--I find something "new" or "forgotten/unconnected" each time.

Franklinbadger | 79 comments Another vote for Wylding Hall
Dark Matter - Michelle Paver
Not sure about a third. Through the Woods by Emily Carroll (graphic novel/ short stories) disturbed me recently

I hadn't even thought about OUT being a horror but it definitely is! That was an intense book.

Aina (readbydusk) | 6 comments Another vote for Dark Matter by Michelle Paver
We Have Always Lived In The Castley by Shirley Jackson
Don't Look Now by Daphne du Maurier (novella but still!)

message 25: by Laurie (new)

Laurie (coffinfinite) I too loved Dark Matter and Michelle Paver's more recent book Wakenhyrst was also very good.

I enjoyed The Girl from the Well by Rin Chupeco, it was a refreshing take on the "long haired Japanese ghost" trope.

I just finished reading The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling and really liked it. Ever since I saw the film The Descent I've been waiting for a really good caving horror novel, and this one had lesbians in it, which made it even better.

Ahhhhh, caving horror and lesbians?? Following this thread is wrecking my TBR list, haha. (But seriously, thank you, this looks great!)

I don't suppose you can recommend anything similar to Through The Woods? It's a long shot because it seems so unique, but I'd love to read something else like that.

I know that she has a new graphic novel coming out. The Bloody Chamber was fantastic. It wasn't a graphic novel but it in the horror and fairytale realm.

message 29: by Franklinbadger (new)

Franklinbadger | 79 comments Thanks! I really need to read The Bloody Chamber - it's been on my TBR list for nineteen years..

Cécile | 56 comments THE CREEPER MAN by Dawn Kurtagich (gothic & horror)
MY SWEET AUDRINA by VC Andrews (gothic & mystery)
LAKE EPHEMERAL by Anya Allyn (gothic & sci-fi)

I also really enjoyed The Rust Maiden, but it was already mentionned several times ^^
