Laura Dewease (ldewease) | 6 comments The novel title I am searching for is a twist on a fairy tale. I read this book within the past 3 years, but I have no idea when it was written. The main female character turns out to be the "princess" and the male character turns out to be a generic expendable character that we find out shouldn't continue to exist once the evil force "Story" brings about the happily ever after of joining the prince together with the princess. However, the boy character and the "princess" character work together and try to fight "Story" and change the ending. There is some tie into a magical forest that plays a role, and somehow the main characters rebel against Story. I just cannot remember the character's names nor the title of the book. One part of the story, I recently remembered, was that when the princess character and the boy (I think he is a Jack character) enter the town they meet up with the cobbler. The cobbler helps them in some way, but I do not remember the extent of the help.

SBC (essbeecee) | 1594 comments It's not YA (I think it's middle grade), but could it be Into the Wild by Sarah Beth Durst? They are pulled into the world of fairy tales by a magical forest and forced to act out stories (if I remember correctly) that they want to rebel against. I haven't read the sequel,Out of the Wild yet, so I'm not sure how things turn out.

Laura Dewease (ldewease) | 6 comments Thank you for your response, but this novel doesn't have a connection to modern times. It starts in the same "once upon a time" as it ends. No transports through time. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Maria (sexydva) | 1 comments Could it be one of the Disney Twisted Tales? Maybe Mirror, Mirror?

Laura Dewease (ldewease) | 6 comments Thank you for the suggestion, but not that isn't it either! Still looking!

Iris (arcoirisn) | 12 comments Could it be a book from the series by Soman Chainani that starts with The School for Good and Evil?

Christine Indorf | 5 comments I just read cinder. That is definitely is a fairy tale with a twist!!

Jennifer Riley | 4 comments It doesn’t have a cobbler, but could it be The Hazel Wood? Alice is the main character and Finch is from New York and they try to change her story in the Hinterlands

Cassandra Barsby | 33 comments An Unfortunate Fairy Tale by Chanda Hahn?

6 book series about a girl who finds out shes a princess. Boy named Jared is linked to story book that writes out fairy tales and they have to stop them coming true or something.

I absolutely LOVED Cinder and the rest of the Lunar Chronicles. It is one of my absoulte favorite series for YA. Thank you all for your suggestions. I will look at the Chandra Hahn book. I have read, Into the Wild, recently and it is not that one. Still on the look.
Sorry I apparently haven't logged into Goodreads, in quite a while. I appreciate all of the suggestions.

SBC (essbeecee) | 1594 comments Oh, I think I read this recently! Now that the thread is bumped it's brought it to mind. Is it Ash & Bramble by Sarah Prineas? It definitely matches your description!

Videomaster21XX | 31 comments Probably not it, but the description reminds me a bit of the "Dealing With Dragons" series by Patricia C. Wrede.

Just in case:

Taylor | 149 comments Seconding Cassandra's suggestion of the Unfortunate Fairy Tale series. The first book in the series is UnEnchanted

Gillian Wiseman (gillianwiseman) | 241 comments Could it be one of the The Fairy GodmotherFive Hundred Kingdoms (Fairy Godmother) series by Mercedes Lackey?

Laura, can you describe the main characters and plot, just from the early part of the book (without spoilers)? For example, what we might read in the publisher's blurb/description of the book.

Laura Dewease (ldewease) | 6 comments I FOUND IT!!!! It was Ash & Bramble by Sarah Pineas. Thank you to @ SBC for the Title and Author. I apologize for not updating sooner. Once I found the book I had to reread it and it was the book I was looking for! Shoe and Pin are the main characters, and they find themselves servants of Story. Pin is meant to serve the Godmother by carrying out the ending, but Shoe gets in the way of the Godmother's plans setting about major complications in the constructed ending the Godmother has in mind. Story is not just something to be told it is behind everything. Thank you guys for all of the suggestions. My students are going to love this book (and sequel!).
