SOLVED. YA adventure with a shadow man creature called the Scourge. [s]

ya read around 2009. it was an adventure type book there was a situatoon in the book where some bum tries to lean in on two kids when they are using their card at the atm. the bum sees their pin and ends up stealing the debit card. the stronger of the two friends chases him and ends up getting it back.
there is also some sort of secret society going on and the weaker guy meets the scourge which is an ink like creature with the silohuete (sp?) of a man and it ends up giving him ablilities that make him i guess amazing but he gets spirited away to what i think would be the underworld and he basically gets locked up and forced to fight in death matches and is fed by a raven looking bird creature that bit him and then pukes into a bowl to make the "food"
