Sarah Larkin | 8 comments Genetic mods of appearance common in this time/place - this woman likes her legs longer with fur below knees. One clone, a deep space pilot, is modded for zero G - one arm, one leg, snakelike to move though space ship tunnels, another or same clone is photosynthetic.

Was thinking this might be Ursula K Le Quin. I have a spoiler but will see if anyone is able to identify the book without it. I'll update with spoiler if not...

Andy | 2124 comments This is John Varley's book "Ophiuchi Hotline" The Ophiuchi Hotline combined with one of Varley's short stories "The Phantom of Kansas" which has the murderous clone.

Andy | 2124 comments See this article about the "Eight Worlds" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eight_W... which mentions the one-legged spaceship pilot:
" In The Ophiuchi Hotline a character known as "Javelin" takes modification to extremes by having only one arm and one leg, with a "ped", at opposite corners of a slim body. "

Sarah Larkin | 8 comments Thanks - I’ll check it out and confirm or not, but it certainly sounds right. The Javelin reference could hardly be anything different!

Sarah Larkin | 8 comments I don’t think its Ophiuchi Hotline. This is the plot of that book as described on Amazon: “The invaders came in 2050…They did not kill anyone outright. they said they came on behalf of the intelligent species of Earth—dolphins and whales. The Invaders quietly destroyed every evidence of technology, then peacefully departed, leaving behind plowed ground and sprouting seeds. In the next two years, ten billion humans starved to death.

The remnants of humanity that survived relocated to the moon and other planets. But they are not alone in their struggle—someone or something, somewhere in deep space, is sending them advanced scientific data via the Ophiuchi Hotline. And by the twenty-fifth century, the technological gifts from the Hotline—especially its biological and medical solutions—have created a world unlike any ever known or imagined…”

No reincarnating clone in that, which was the main plot of the book I read. But maybe its all in the short story mentioned, except for the Javelin person. Will check out the short story...

Sarah Larkin | 8 comments Yes the Varley short story is definitely right - looks like I conflated the short story with a character from the book. Thanks so much - solved!
