Hi Darlene, thanks for your feedback. I don't necessarily need to make private what I wrote, I just assumed most of our members probably don't read the moderator discussion thread. But it's good to know that non-mods have notifications for it enabled.

So true. Especially now with covid, libraries aren't available to everyone, then they have to have the title wanted. Only buying will guarantee a book and not everyone can do that. I only just received Normal People and I put a reservation on it just before August.
I'll make sure to read a book for each topic, to keep them current and with content.

I added the winning book (The Reckoning by Grisham) to the group Bookshelf.

Alison, what's our policy on authors promoting their works in the group? A gentleman named Danny created a post for his book in the "Diversity reads" folder. I have since moved it to Social. Though I'm not sure that's the best place for it.
Also, I didn't realise that anyone could create a topic. Good to know.

Thanks, Keli. I'll leave that answer to Queen Alison, but I will point out that we also have an 'Authors & Reviewers Chat' area that could be another place for self-promotion:

I went ahead and added a new folder for _2021_ Book of the Month, with topics for January & February suggestions:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
(was going to add all the months for 2021, but GR is glitching a bit tonight).
Happy Thanksgiving, Snail Mods & friends!
I've got my Dec snail lined up, I have a new topic for diversity reads and I'm doing the last monthly theme thread with a combined nov and dec post, so I'll do a newsletter. I didn't do one last month because I didn't know if anyone else wanted to do one. As one didn't go out, I'll just continue to do one. And if someone else wants to do one or wants me to add something, just message me.
Also, fellow mods and dear leader, are you all happy with me carrying on with the diversity and monthly theme challenges? I think I'm going to put the 2021 monthly theme challenges into one thread, instead of several.
I don't know about you all but I'm so glad 2020 is almost over. I remember saying how great it was going to be on New Year's but it all quickly turned to mud. I never want to wish my life away but I so look forward to putting this past me psychologically. I realise that 2021 isn't magical but I'm totally going with a "je repars à zero" attitude.
Also, just a little personal note. Last night, I was thinking about how hard it was to read this year. Honestly, if I had joined into some high pressure group reading challenges, I'd probably only have read about 25 books the whole year! I had 125 as my goal. So, to combat any lingering 2020 malaise, I'm going to attempt my 125 books again but for charity. I thought I'd ask family, friends, co-workers etc to donate an amount per book for me to read. I'm toying with idea that they can even choose the book. I'm not running a marathon with my knees. I do enough baking/cooking for the homeless charity I already volunteer for. And I'm definitely not doing anything that would make me pee my pants like parachuting, abseiling or any other adrenaline based activity, this is what I came up with, something that works regardless of viruses, weather and age. Anyway, if you all are looking at ways to raise money for a charity you care about here's an idea. I'm sure I'm not the first person to think of it but I still thought I was brilliant for thinking of it.
Anyway, merry Xmas to you all.

Same here, Snails - and happy Christmas/Jul and New Year from Scandinavia (better early than late :-) and may the gods send us snow and frost.

I suggest we set a minimum of 2 months (from 'start' to 'finish' reading dates) for most books, or maybe 3 months if it happens to be doorstopper/chunkster/bullet-stopper length. What do y'all think?
And of course, longer for our Quarterly & Yearly winners.
We don't typically close any of the book discussions for comments, so folks are welcome to chime in long after the 'official' group reading period is over.
~~~
We've already got 10 or so suggestions for next month's book (Jan. 2021). Y'all feel free to put up a poll, or I'll try to remember to do it soon-ish if needed.
January nominations: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Thanks to all you Mods who keep things going here. I know some of you are probably a bit brain-fizzled with all that's going on around Planet Earth these days.
Happy Holidays to all, and may your stockings be filled with books and fun Snail stuff.
Thanks StarMan for putting up the thread for the 2nd chance winner. I totally agree with the extended finish date as I don't even get my copy until the end of the month (or after).
And happy holidays to you.
And happy holidays to you.
Hey lovely mods, I hope you're all having a nice hols. I think we're all set up for 2021, polls for Jan BOM, 1st Quarter and yearly reads up. Though it's currently a tie for our BOM 😬.
Personally, I've already got my diversity theme up, I'll post January theme challenges and will get my January Meet a Member up. I'll try to get the newsletter out on the 31st.
I did try to clean up our topics but I have no idea how to move some of the old topics into the archive folder. Can someone, *cough* *cough* Tim, advise.
Stay safe and sane.
I'll look thru later and try to clean up things a bit. Generally I don't delete anything except possibly book polls that are older (maybe over 1-2 years ago).
But we can look for discussion topics with no comments in a long time and maybe delete some of those (or move to the bottom of a folder).
Another option is to move older/stale discussions to the 'ARCHIVED' folder. To do that, you go to a specific discussion topic, click 'Edit' (up top near the discussion name), and then on the edit page you change its folder to 'ARCHIVED' from a pull-down list.
Thank you, all you Snail moderators! Hope y'all have a nice New Years Eve and a safe 2021.
Hey lovely mods and leader, I've set up our first 2nd chance poll but thought I'd wait until the March BOTM poll was set up before sending out invites. Keep the emails to a minimum and gor efficiency. I have put it on our homepage, so for our pro-active members, they can vote (after midnight).
So if one of you lovelies creates the March BOTM, please remember to include the 2nd Chance poll in the email.
Hope your schedule smooths out so you can get back with us as mod! Best of luck to you.
Anything you want mentioned in the March newsletter, Tim? Any threads to promote?
I'm going to try to send it out tomorrow. Sorry, I didn't give you much time to respond.
You might remind our current Snails to click the 'Invite People' link if they want to invite a friend to our group.
A special thanks to Keli, who's already doing a great job with the newsletters & 'Meet A Member' the last few months, to Ev for always nominating good books, and to biblio • bliss (our lovely Queen Snail!) for keeping those fun threads & the Facebook page alive. We appreciate Lupe and everyone else who helps keep things fresh here, as well as all the contributions made by Vickie and others who've helped us out as co-Mods in the past.
And if other group members are reading this:
Thanks for your many book review links and comments, Bkwmlee & Candace & Steven & Jane and others.
We have about 252 Snails in the group now! I hope to see more folks nominating books and voting in polls, when time & energy permit.
Your suggestions are always welcome here, and thanks for all y'all do for the best little group on Goodreads.
I was fairly overwhelmed this June, so I don’t have anything prepared for meet a member or Diversity. I can do July themes but i think I will pass on doing a July newsletter and pick it back up again in August. Sorry 😞
StarMan, you are doing a brilliant job of keeping things flowing. Thanks. I will set up the page tomorrow. 😘
Thanks for your help, Keli Snail!
Well, I can absolutely say you've not done anything wrong that I know about. As long as you're respectful you can say what you like. I don’t know if you will get what you are looking for on here, in terms of good debates about books you may be better with a book club. I do wish you good joy and fun in your future endeavours. Thanks for being with us for a little bit. And you're always welcome to come back.
Keli: Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the group! Feel free to take a break from any and all duties if you need/want to. I'm not sure the Diversity topic is getting the recognition it deserves but I'm sure we have some members who are participating and enjoying your contributions! ;-)
I'm not going to be doing as much on Goodreads in 2022, so if anyone wants to step up and help out more as a group Moderator, it would be greatly appreciated.
Please chime in here if you are willing to help moderate during the next few months, or if you think we need to post a "Moderators Needed" topic for the group.
A big thanks to Keli Snail for posting many of the discussions and polls the last many months, sending out nice newsletters, and helping keep things current here. And thanks to everyone else who has contributed what they can, when they can. I know things have been weird for many folks during COVID Year Two. We've have several moderators over the years, and all have helped make this group a nice place to visit.
If you have other suggestions for the group, let us know.
Examples only: Fewer book discussions? Quarterly & Year-Long only? New discussion topics? More detailed discussions/Q&As on the current book?
And as always, feel free to invite your nice GR friends to the group, using the "Invite People" link that's on the Book Snail group Home page (and most of the other group pages, if you are using the Desktop version of GR).
Happy New Year and Happy Reading to all.
You know me I'm down for a quarterly and annual read only. I would be able to maintain (and read) that if no one else is around.
If y'all want to recruit 1 or more new co-Mods, you might say so in a newsletter, and/or a new post on this existing thread:
Happy Reading to All
Glad to hear we have a diversity folder -- I wasn't aware of it. I will definitely be making some use of it. My 0.02$ is open themes might work better, as diverse books are often harder to come by.
