SOLVED: Children's/YA > SOLVED. I'm looking for a fantasy book that has a non-human (perhaps blue furred) protagonist and a plant creature companion on their way to fix an artificial, dying light source.

Ross | 2 comments I read this fantasy book when I was in school, maybe around 2002. The main character is a bluish (I think) slightly furry, large eyed, humanoid creature that travels by foot (It is well adapted to running or loping for long distances) towards an artificial sun or light source in the hopes of mending it. On his travels he meets a small plant creature that communicates by making a laughing sound. Later he meets a human boy whom decides to travel with him.

Meanwhile a female of his species (I forget the relationship between the female and the main character, perhaps his mother) is enslaved by a predatory species and made to care for their eggs, instead she pierces the eggs so as to kill the infants inside.

I think the story is set on a distantly future earth.

I think I remember something about the eyes of the heroes species being not as well developed as human eyes, better suited to dimmer lights and so if he manages to fix the light machine he will have to travel away from it with his eyes covered. Also only the infants of his species need to sleep. I think the story starts with his mother watching him sleeping and remembering a time when she too needed sleep.
