Review:I loved the concept of the story. But it was the lead female character that made me hate the book with passion. She was nothing but a whiny little baby. The secondary characters I liked but couldn't make up for lead character. I hate giving out low ratings but in this case I had no choice.

Review:

Another good book in this series. I wasn't crazy about the first book, but I am beginning to enjoy them more and more as I read. I really like the protagonist, Taylor Jackson. While she does have a bit of baggage in her past, she doesn't go on and on about it like many female detectives in novels. I also like how her boyfriend doesn't keep trying to make her quit her job, which seems to be another common theme with female detectives.

In this book, we find out the name of the killer in the very beginning, and continue to learn more background information as Taylor tries to find him. Simultaneously, Taylor continues to be watched by another serial killer, the Pretender, who was featured in the second book. I don't mind having the Pretender in the background of these novels, but I have a feeling the author is building up to a big ending with this story line, and I'm hoping she finds a way to make him a little more interesting before devoting an entire book to him. I have the next novel, The Immortals, on my shelf and can't wait to read it!

Jane | 976 comments Sorry to hear that your book sucked. I hate when that happens to me. Better Luck next time!

Thanks Angie, luckily I am quiet easy to please so I don't read a lot of books I don't like. I needed a Q for my title A-Z challenge which is why I picked this book.

Standalones do NOT include 1st in series as I previously told the team. Standalones are just that-- Standalones

Sorry that you misunderstood that sentence about standalone Ezi but glad you had another book that fit.

This is my kind of book, though it is more than twice as long as my last book it felt shorter. The twins Josh and Sophie together with Nicholas Flamel and others are fighting mythical creatures. We know who the bad guys are but then again it is not all black and white. I am looking forward to continuing this series.

18 yr old Delaney Cross and her older brother Maddox are still trying to regain their equilibrium after their father's car accident killed a 3 year old boy and their mother attempted suicide. They decided that redemption would begin by gaining the forgiveness of the family their father's accident affected.

When Delaney meets Adrian Westfall, he isn't what she expected. She decided to befriend him before revealing that she is daughter of the man who killed his nephew. The closer they got the harder the secret became and Delaney didnt know if Adrian would forgive her. Could she risk losing his love or could they move forward once she reveals her secret?

I have read 3 new adult books in a row where the MC blamed themselves for everything short of the sun rising every day. That whole martyr thing is starting to feel disingenuous and it overly dramatic.

The audiobook was good, the narrator kept me engaged and how the author told it kept me waiting for the other shoe to drop. It had some twists and certainly explained Adrian's pain. I really felt bad for Adrian, but Delaney's mother was a piece of work. I wonder why the kids never went to see their father in prison and ask him some questions regarding their mother. I hope that Maddox's book explains more about her abusive behavior but that woman was self-centered and horrid.
I am glad Delaney found someone who cared about her other than her brother and I hope Maddox finds peace too.

Angie ~aka Reading Machine~ (wolffaerie17) | 2160 comments I've got Nook HD+ and love it but I never accessed all the features on my NookColor. I'm just pleased I figured out a feature that let's me copy links and then paste them. Which is what I was doing for when I'm away from desktop computer. I've had HD+ since February but I had my NookColor for almost 4 years before upgrading. I'm not as impressed with Amazon's Kindles though. I realize I'm in the minority but it always seemed clumsy to me even though it has many of the features that Nook's do. I've got the Kindle and Overdrive App. I absolutely adore the Overdrive App. It lets me borrow books from two different libraries in my state. Sorry for the long winded answer!

soooo good...definitely my favorite book in this series so far. I mean, I went to bed at 11 really tired and ended up finishing the last 200 pages. I'm sure my boyfriend is thrilled since he has to work in the morning! I needed to get to the end because it was literally painful reading about the trap set for the victim. Imagine being in a pit in the middle of a swamp in 100 degree weather with one jug of water...and snakes, mosquitoes and maggots everywhere...not to mention bears. It freaked me out but in a good way.

Rating & Review: ★★★½.
Lucky Gunn was a 17 year old who had been so neglected and abused by his meth addict mother that the gym owner Brick invited Lucky to come and stay in one of the small rooms in the gym. At least he wouldn't be walking around with all those bruises and Brick could make sure Lucky would get a meal.

At the gym, Brick Yard, their prized boxer Drayton Cruz was just outted as a gay man, he was quickly losing sponsors. Brick tried to smooth everything over but eventually Dray went into hiding and the boxing community's treatment of Dray left a huge impression on the young Lucky.

6 years later, Brick was diagnosed with stomach and lung cancer, and he couldn't train Lucky anymore. Brick invited Dray to train Lucky and get him to the heights that Dray once achieved. However Dray and Lucky were attracted to each other and that wouldn't be good for Lucky's career. They knew it would boil down to a choice, boxing or Dray.

This story was full of people who wanted to matter to someone else and have a safe place. While it had a lot of sad parts but a lot of understated kindness. Brick's impact in their community was subtle, and yet so significant. I also like how Mac and the people Brick helped tried to pay it forward. Lucky's mother was a horrible mother and I really think if Brick hadn't rescued Lucky, he would have died. Dray prior to Lucky was naive, but he really grew up after the outing incident.

I really took away the fact that people took responsibility for others even though they weren't related. Family bonds were forged by need and love, not by blood. It was nice to see people from a bad beginning reach for and find a helping hand on the road to peace and safety.

My only issue was the characters were underdeveloped and we could have used more background information on the main and secondary characters.

This book had its ups and downs. The only Tess Gerritsen I have read so far is the entire Rizzoli & Isles series, which is soooo good. This one was completely different, and not what I expected.

First, it was a historical fiction novel about a series of murders in the 1800s. It began in present day with a woman finding a very old human skeleton in her backyard, and was supposed to follow two story lines simultaneously, the present day and the 1800s, but fell short because there were very few chapters focused on the present day story, and the chapters were much shorter. There was a romance going on in the present day, but I didn't care much because it was so under developed.

The main storyline was OK, readable but not up to Rizzoli & Isles standards. I gave it three stars because it was an enjoyable book, but definitely not my favorite from this author.

I really enjoyed this book despite the mixed reviews.
Alec was dumped by Tyler, his boyfriend of two years and he was depressed because they worked together and now Tyler has a new hottie. Plus Tyler and Alec were planning a charity fundraiser and Alec couldn't handle seeing Tyler and his new piece together. So Alec goes along with his mechanic's lie that Alec and Dylan were together. The problem is Dylan is straight.

But things between Alec and Backup boyfriend Dylan got complicated when a drunk Alec gave Dylan a wild ride in bed and now Dylan is quite curious about how Alec gets down. This begins a journey of exploration and a cute story.

I liked the writing, I liked everyone except Noah. I think he meant well, but he was annoying as a BFF. Dylan's recounting of his past with Rick made me like him even more. This was a really good one.

I was really unsure how to rate this book but it ended on ★★★. It was easy to read but not an easy read. I don't like books about cults as it seems they are always ruled by men and full of abuse. It is not only the women that are ruled and abused in this book, some men might like to make a change but that either cost them their family or their life. It actually seems like the main character, who is 13, has grown up in a loving family albeit it consists of her father, his 3 wives and around 20 siblings.
This book to me doesn't have a happy end though it could be worse.
