Week 3: Roll 1
Spot: 20

Harder (Caroline & West, #2) by Robin York
Book: Harder by Robin York (Book 2, Caroline & West)
Finished: 9/20
Rating & Review: 3.75 stars, not quite 4-stars.
I hate that this book went from a Revenge Porn Plot to a "save him from his hot mess family" angsty NA. The Revenge Porn thing is not been explored that much so I was really enjoying it. But I guess the author defaulted to NA standard, rude boy from a messed up family who needs that love to give him the strength to aim higher and.

If you liked Wes and Caroline in book 1, then it is the same but reverse here. In Book 1, Caroline was drowning in misery after her ex Nate released her pictures on social media. Wes gave her space, encouragement and used the bakery to give her something else to focus on. In this book Caroline was the anchor for Wes after his father died and his family was in a tailspin. Caroline had to endure some seriously mean attempts by Wes to push her away before he finally gave up fighting her and gave into their love. He found peace and joy and a clearly path to a new future.

I have mixed feelings about Caroline. When she wants something, she just ignores everything else. Some would call it focus and determination, I call saw her as having tunnel vision. I get her need to save Wes the way he saved her, but I found she sacrificed Bridget, her father's efforts on the lawsuits and even her own dignity at times to the altar of Wes. Maybe Wes was worth it, but I wanted more of a focus on the issue with Nate--on that crime that needed to be addressed more.

Read: Split Second by Alex Kava (Maggie O'Dell #2)
Split Second (Maggie O'Dell, #2) by Alex Kava
Finished: 9/20/14
Rating:
★★★★

This is the second book in the series starring Maggie O'Dell, a genius FBI profiler with a traumatic history involving a serial killer. In the first book, Maggie's experience with Albert Stucky was described briefly, and we found out that she had nightmares along with her physical scars.

In this book, Stucky has escaped from prison and has been on the loose for five months. Maggie has been removed from the case, because of her history and "obsession" with Stucky, but he is now following her and murdering women that she comes into contact with. Unfortunately, no one seems to understand the magnitude of the situation and most everyone believes that Maggie is losing it.

I liked this book more than the first one, because it delves more deeply into O'Dell's character. It is also a very creepy thriller. It kind of irritated me how no one seemed to take O'Dell seriously, even though she was obviously being stalked by this guy...it seemed a little over the top. I gave this book 4 stars, because it was hard to put down and I am definitely ready to read #3!

Lying on the Couch by Irvin D. Yalom

Finished: 9/24/14

I LOVED this book...totally not what I was expecting but a very pleasant surprise. I got a mixture of my two favorite things...psychology and a really good novel. Through extremely in depth portrayal of several main characters, Yalom explored the fine lines of patient-therapist boundaries, and posed several complicated ethical dilemmas that made my head spin. He managed all of this with beautiful and simple prose, making this a good read for anyone, whether or not they are in the field.

Without a bunch of psychoanalytic jargon, I was able to appreciate this book on a professional level but also on a human level. It reads like a juicy novel that happens to be written by an extremely brilliant man...fabulous!

Rating & Review: 3.75 stars or 4-stars.
Percival Whyborne's father hired Griffin Flaherty to investigate why workers keep going missing at his mine located at Threshold Mountain. He had already hired a bunch of security, including Griffin's ex-lover Elliot. Whyborne began experiencing insecurity in his relationship with Griffin as Elliot began disrupting their relationship and the investigation. What is lurking in that cave and are the missing people dead or alive?

I am surprised at how much I enjoyed this series because this isn't a romance series. It's mystery, supernatural, thriller with romance as a side dish. But I like how Whyborne is growing a pair and starting to act with more confidence. I like him and Griffin and that mouthy Christine. They are a trio, but not a menage and it works well as an investigation partnership.

I had a hardtime figuring out about the Yay-hoos because I couldn't quite picture it in my mind. I will have to try to draw it out. I liked it a lot though and will continue with the series.

Book 1 in this series had a very abrupt ending and I knew I wanted to read the second. Unfortunately it often takes me a long time to get to the next in the series, this time over a year. This meant I actually went back and read the last chapter in the first book just to remind myself of the story.
In this second book Loki is trying to free Cera, an entity, that has been captured on earth by the help of Odin. Amy is mad at Loki but of course also in love with him. This book introduce Steve, an agent, who is part of the team looking after the entity. I hope we see a lot more of Steve in next book as he is very likable.

I'm not sure how I feel about this series. The plots are great, which makes me want to keep reading. This was a solid serial killer thriller (I rhymed) and those are my fave, but the characters are killing me. Lucy Kinkaid is super irritating with her PTSD and her delicate nature and she wants to be an FBI agent so badly, but all she can do is cry and feel sorry for herself when it doesn't happen immediately. I'm not a cruel person, I mean I'm a social worker and I have empathy for people who have been through trauma but not in my THRILLER NOVELS! I don't see how she can hack it in the FBI if she can't pull herself together.

Anyways, Lucy isn't even my main problem, her boyfriend is the absolute worst. He's obsessed with her and it grosses me out. His idea of helping her is to be really mad and talk about how stupid the FBI is. He goes behind her back to try to talk her way into the FBI, while simultaneously trying to make sure she is never in a dangerous situation...he's a nutball. I hope she dumps him in the next book.

Rating & Review: 4-stars. I don't know why I've been avoiding this series. I didn't really enjoy the first book on audio, so I read this one. I think this should be a read only series. Unfortunately I've already bought book 3 on audio.
Anyway, older Kelly boy Sam was on a mission with his KGI operatives to bring down a crime lord whose been smuggling both arms and drugs into the U.S. from Mexico.
But while he's working, he indulges with a little waitress at a near by bar for a springtime fling. Little did Sam know his waitress is his mark's daughter.

After the mission, she shows up 5 months later pregnant. Talk about trust issues. Who is she and what side is she on?

I love the Kelly family especially the matriarch Marlene. Their sense of inclusiveness and trust and love is just awesome. Sam was a great hero

I'm kind of tired of these lady cops who are supposed to be badass but are about 2 years old emotionally. The theme seems to be "I can't come to terms with my emotions so I have to isolate myself until some guy steps in and saves me from myself." It's just old. This book wasn't as good as the first one, and I'm tired of the continuing story line. Although there were aspects I liked, it's not enough to make me continue the series.

It is a romance so of course it is a happy end.

AUSA Cameron "Cam" Lynde just finished up a pretty grueling case, so she decided to take a vacation--to a hotel a few blocks from her house. Unfortunately, while on there, she witnessed a murder. A call girl was suffocated after having sex with a married senator, so now she is the only one who can bring the murdered to justice.
Special Agent Jack Pallas was called in to solve the case and also keep the only eye witness alive. The only problem is that these two, Cam & Jack, had a run-in 3 years ago and there is lingering animosity.

Jack blames Cam for ruining a career bust and also getting him transferred to Colorado, away from his family in Illinois. Cam blames Jack for making her out to be on the take from criminals, undermining her as a prosecutor.

They are both having to lick their wounds and try to keep Cam alive as the killer has just discovered her identity and wants to silence her for good.

This was a fun romantic suspense. the narrator did a great job of capturing the tone of the book. It was kind of serious, but had some humor and some passion too. I liked Jack and Cam, but I really loved the supporting cast. Cam's friends kept her grounded and added humor to her life. I like that Jack has alpha instincts but wasn't overbearing either. I also found their chemistry to be believable and their journey together to be realistic, not rushed nor forced. Great series beginner!

I needed to read this for several challenges but I have kept putting it off as I have a problem with classics. This was better than expected and of course it helps it is in my favourite genre of paranormal.
We don't actually see much of Dracula but everything is about what he does, what he can do and how to hunt him.
Dracula is a truly evil vampire and nothing matters to him but his own survival.
