Ya Series - group of friends with a blind guy who can see after an operation

Read it a few years back. Group of friends, but there's one blind guy who's dating another member of the group of friends. She always has an unlit cigarette in her mouth, think they're high school/college students. Things with her boyfriend go downhill after he gets an operation and can see. That's all I can remember for now.

The Making Out series (originally Boyfriends/Girlfriends series) has a character who is blind. Ben. It's stretched out over several books. The author is Katherine Applegate. From plot summaries it may not be as successful as wanted so unsure if it's what you are after.

The unlit cigarette thing does sound like Nina, Ben's girlfriend, from the Making Out series (bookel's suggestion) - this is from the first book, Zoey Fools Around:

"School,” Nina said, crumpling the unlit cigarette in her hand and tossing it toward the trash can. She was allergic to smoke, but the cigarette went with a certain image she liked, so she smoked without lighting.
