Looking for the above book. I think the brother was always drunk/gambling etc the Hero saved/rescued her

How did the hero meet her? Did he attend the parties? Did the brother offer her up to pay off his gambling debts or try to marry her off to the highest bidder? I’ve read some like that.

I believe he tried to marry her off to the highest bidder. Or perhaps offer her up to pay for his gambling debts. The former is more likely.

Hmmm... there are several with this setup, but the one that comes to my mind first is one in which the brother uses the sister to buy a horse from a Scottish lord, although he had already promised the sister to his lecherous (and possibly violent) neighbor. The H agrees as a way to save the h (or maybe she escapes her bro, and the H finds her on the road? I seem to remember her riding a cow or donkey or something) Meanwhile the brother and/or neighbor are trying
to get the h back through traditional villainy. If that sounds right, I’ll dig through my audiobook library for
the title & author.
