I read this book at least two years ago, or at most, in 2016. It had an almost celtic vibe. At thebeginning of each chapter, there was a snippet of some epic poem about the guy who created the main character’s clan. At one point, the main character is banished to watch over some sheep and hears the monsters on the edge of the valley, and one kills a lamb. Later, he goes on a journey and kills a theif by shoving him off a cliff. (view spoiler)[ After travelling to another clan in the valley, he meets a girl. She convinces him to learn more about the monsters, and they discover that the monsters starved to death long ago. Turns out the real monsters are the ancestors set to guard the cliff, who walk the earth at night. After killing his formerly beloved uncle, and after defeating the ancestor who started it all, the main character and the girl decide they couldn’t bear to live in the valley anymore and leave to find their own way. Bump! The author was a man, I remember, and he looked youngish. Also, the book cover was green, possibly with foliage. The words on the cover might've been metallic?
About how old is the main character? Is the clan associated with a particular name (such as animal names or a surname)? Does it take place on Earth or precivilization? Do you remember details about the monsters? Are the snippets of epic poems created by the author or are they a reference to historical poems? Your description of the book reminds me of Dark Eden by Chris Beckett but I don't think it's a match.
