I read this book about 2 years ago. Part of a series. The main character washes up on a beach of an alternate universe that is agrarian and doesn't have technology. Because of his science back ground, he is able to help them with various inventions. One invention is an anesthesia gas and with it he helps a boy with appendicitis. There are evil people in a neighboring city or continent, and the man works to unite the smaller communities. It's possible that this community has a church but I may be confusing this with another book.

The man meets a woman and they live together. He notices that she doesn't shave her legs.

I remembered another detail - the main character is on a flight, maybe working on his PhD thesis, when the plane gets hit by lightening. This is how to travels to this alternate world.
