Justanotherbiblophile | 1814 comments SOLVED: "The Perfect Fit" (info) by Isaac Asimov (RIO)

Short story(?) about a computer hacker who got caught in the future. They wiped/conditioned him so that he can't stand to use computers for (temporarily? for a year?), and he has to beg other people to access stuff for him - he can't even pay for anything, since there is no non-digital money - but he's been given a large bank account.

Also, this may be by Orson Scott Card. But I wouldn't put any money on it.

Andy | 2124 comments I think this is Asimov "The Perfect Fit"

Justanotherbiblophile | 1814 comments Hmm, first review didn't look good at all:

"He referred to a 3-dimensional chess game which was a game with 8 chessboards stacked upon each other, making the playing area cubic rather than square."

But this snippet does look a lot better:

"In a thoroughly computerized society, a man who attempts a computerized crime is made to suffer a very fitting punishment."

I guess I'll toss it under possibly solved for now.

Andy | 2124 comments Looks like the whole story is online at the site of the magazine that originally published it http://www.edn.com/electronics-news/4...

Justanotherbiblophile | 1814 comments Yup, that was it.

Just curious, what did you search with to find it? I did some google searches once I got that name, but didn't come up with it...

Andy | 2124 comments I had read the story and remembered that it was by Asimov, and had a suspicion that it was in the collection "Winds of Change," so I could find the title pretty easily. Seaching for "Perfect Fit" and Asimov brings up the edn link on the first page of google results.

Justanotherbiblophile | 1814 comments Weird. That shows up in my current google searches.

Checked my history, but it wasn't showing accurate things for (most of) my searches.

I'd, however, only gotten these two links:

Joseph Trzaska | 1 comments Thanks for finding this story. I joined this website when I saw your posting about The Perfect Fit. I am an avid Asimov fan and own this particular collection, but I have not read it in years. I thought of this story while having a discussion on the punishment of a hacker who exposed the perpetrators of a rape crime (http://hackread.com/hacker-arrested-f...).
Could not, for the life of me, remember the title however. Thanks again!

I'm glad that this 'solved request' resolved your problem. Did you get here via google?
